Well today I went to the Land of the old Folks for a Tournament, (Jurassic Park), and my Partner and I ended up in a THREE WAY TIE for Second or Third Place.

Too may surprise most of the Dinos (Old Farts) stay around to watch the final games, for Second or Third Place. For the first time in a long time i found myself having a HARD TIME Tuning out the Lookie Looooo's, and spectators. Not because they were noisy, but because I was just aware of their presents.

So I ask you guy who do the Tournament thing all the Time, How, or What do you do to Turn Out EVERY THING HAPPENING AROUND YOU, so all you are FOCUS on is THE SHOT......

To me total focus and concentration is an exhausting thing. I don't even try to maintain that all the way through a match, non-stop. I try to keep my mind on the match and try not to get too distracted by the people around me between shots, but I'm just kind of watching the table and letting my mind rest. When I start my preshot routine is when I start to try to get into total focus on the shot at hand. Getting into the "zone" is either going to happen or it isn't (for me)...I can't make it happen. When it does happen, it's great...it's like everything just sort of happens for me and I'm not even really working that hard, and I'm nearly completely unaware of what's going on around me other than the game. When it doesn't happen, then I just have to play the best I can and try to use my preshot routine to cue my brain that it's time to focus.

Somehow the more people watching the better thrill I get inside. I seem to get even better focus and concentration. It is always a great feeling. Maybe look at this in a more positive light. Look at them, acknowledge them and then get to work. It might be because you kinda see them but do not completely acknowledge to yourself that they are there enjoying you play.

Sort of like when you see a shadow of someone near your table when you are playing but never get up to look to see if they might interfere with what you are doing. Once you turn around and see that they are not going to interfere, your fine. Before then it was an unresolved thought in your mind that would cause you to miss.

Hypnosis Tapes

Louie "St. Louie Louie" Roberts used to listen to hypnosis tapes to focus. You could have blown up the pool room around him and he wouldn't even notice. They worked so well another player stole them from him. Haven't tried it but I know it worked for him.

Excerpt from my upcoming book, The GosPool According to the Beard:

Category: Able To Consume Great Quantities Of Chemicals And Still Play Good:

#1 "St. Louie Louie" Roberts, from St. Louis, MO. While living with a Chicago cue maker, he once emptied the cue maker's medicine cabinet. The cue maker was a hypochondriac who routinely had shelves of assorted medicines that could bring you up, take you down, or eliminate all pain. Louie (no pharmacist he), would just take potluck, and play Pill-Russian-Roulette. He'd say, "I'll try two of those white ones with three of those pinkies, and maybe seal the deal with one of those red babies. I'll save those brown stripers for later." He would chase them all down with a few six-packs of beer, play for days, and never miss a ball..

St. Louie Louie, according to the Beard

Thanks Freddy. I knew that it had to be more than tapes or everyone would have them. I forgot about the chemicals. He'd come into the pool halls in St. Louis so wired sometimes it was a wonder he could play at all, but he did.

Wow where do you play?!?!? The railbirds give you gifts??? Man the last time I heard of that was back in Bethlehem. :) I have always had the same problem I can never focus my cake because I was aware of my presents.

Focusing ....

I have always had good focusing powers, of course though,
at times I have difficulty too (usually when the intellectual
cycle in my biorithym is at a low point ... lol). My 20+ years
of working as a Sr. Systems Analyst actually helped my
focusing abilities, because I would be concentrating on
developing logic for mainframe systems, and would get
interrupted by users all the time, so I had to be able to
turn it on and off.

Diet and exercise, I believe, play a part in your ability
to focus, as well as not drinking alcohol when playing.

I have found 1 thing that I believe helps (seems easier
to get in a zone), and that is a Vitamin called Fortify.
It is a Kroger product that has 26 vitamins and minerals
and also contains Ginsieng. I have taken Vitamins before
and never noticed a difference, so I have attributed
the increase in mental clarity to the Ginsieng.
It, also, is fairly cheap, as Vitamin supplements go.

Hmmm...what it usually does for me (metaphorically speaking, of course) is that I'll end up using the wrong access method....I'll try to access a VSAM data set with VTAM or BSAM channel programs. Read backward CCW to a 3390 device....and miss the shot by 2 diamonds....:)

Jurassic Park??? are you talking about Sun City??... They have some a couple nice pool rooms...

BTW..If you need some "distraction practice" I can send my 5 year old daughter your way...She is just tall enough that her head sits right above the pocket....She runs around the table and pops her head up and down right behind the pocket that your going to shoot into...To top it off...she taunts me with the line "your going to miss this one" right before I shoot...

I call all of the Age Restricted Communities in the Valley (JURASSIC PARK), as that is where the Old Dinosaurs Roam.

Sun City, Sun City Grand, Corta Bella, Sun Flower Trailer Estates, Sun City West, etc., etc., etc..... :p

Never could figure this one out about old people.

They tell you that you know nothing...and that they have been there and done that and all and you should listen to them because they are old and wise.....

Then....right after they have been taken for every last penny on a ridulous phone scam, they complain how they were taken advantage of because they were old.......

I refuse to talk to anyone. Stay silent and you wont be thinking of other things. Works for me.

My friend is like that, he actually plays better with more people watching and worse practicing by himself, go figure, I tend to start thinking more and think don't miss with a crowd watching, funny I never have that problem with the player I'm playing, it's only those whispers and looks from spectators, I just want to know what they are thinking.

I would rather have them shout out you suck...your going to miss:D I can deal with that for some reason, same goes for golf, first tee with lots of people waiting to tee off, that gets to me sometimes, I think I put too much pressure on myself, like I have to perform just for them.

I always said If I was a pro golfer the last thing I would want is for everyone to be silent when I tee off, I would much rather have cheers and yelling, even if it was negative, like boos, I could deal with it, like who the hell cares about them kinda thing.....but the silence means they really want me to perform good, and I don't want to disappoint.

I know some people would find it hard to say play a round with Tiger or a game with Sigel etc., but I would raise my game and play better, the player I'm with gives me zero problems, only the silent spectators get in my head.

Do I need a shrink? lol :D
