There is a segment on Golf and the fact they have lost a ton of players, and business. It mirrors pools issues and a lot of similarities.

They are trying new Golf games... one in particular was 15" holes. To make the game not as tough. This might not be the worst idea for pool except you would commit a set of rails and slate to 6".

Anyways it is not just pool. They put a lot of the "blame" on this generation and like I said, it can be word for word pool's issues...

The golf media and business gleefully tore Tiger apart. And he was the cash cow. They brought it on themselves.

Good segment.

(The below is more of a ramble, than one making a point)

Bryant Gumbel says golf is, ".....hard, expensive, time-consuming."
All true. Apparently, subsequent generations don't care to invest the
effort and energy to become a golfer of consequence.
It's much more acceptable to download an app and play a game on-the-fly,
with seemingly immediate positive results.

And so it goes for pool; although pool is not expensive and not too difficult to learn,
it is nonetheless time-consuming to become a good player. "
Yeah, there's an app for that."

Times change, environments change, stimuli change, preferences change.

If you know your history, "pool" used to be played outside on the grass.
Now it's played indoors on green felt.
The game will change again, and will do so according to the needs and desires of the people.
Future generations will dictate that change so that it fits with the current climate.

You got that right!

They also sent WAY to much time trying to keep the game amongst the elite. The money is in the masses, that doesn't mean you cant have a elite group, but they waited to long to bring the common people to the game...,

and as you so wisely stated, they slaughtered the cash cow!

Pool returning to grass? Maybe Croquet?

As far as golf isn't the prize money up for 2014 as usual? Our public course near me are reasonable in price, and there are lots to choose from.

I must say, the first time I heard my nephew brag about being able to play Metallica on his xbox rock band "guitar", I knew things were getting bad.

Golf is the most beautiful game ever conceived by man. Golf has a problem where young people are concerned. Golf (and anything else for that matter) is a distraction from time with their smart phone. Our youth can do without golf. They have their smart phone.

A smart phone is interactive. Golf is not.

Don't think that this malady is an affliction of just the youth.

I was under the impression it was a joke, like the stuff you see The onion
http://www.theonion.com/

At the Phoenix Open this year.
"A record Friday/2nd Round crowd of 121,901 fans watched as Phil Mickelson, Bill Haas, Keegan Bradley and Brandt Snedeker dazzled with low, low scores."

Golf is just darn hard to play casually unless you are really just a natural.
No other sport can make you look like a bigger fool if you aren't good; actually even if you ARE good. It can make a grown man want to crawl into a hole. Just ask Charles Barkley...

If you go to a pro tournament and watch them warm up...any of them...they will hit shot after shot that 99% of the people will never be able to duplicate...ever.
Putting...ya anybody can sink a putt sometimes.

Golf has had it's ups and downs but it's just plain big and getting bigger especially in Asia where many of the top women pros are coming from...and making millions of dollars doing it. Prize funds are still growing world wide. Literally hundreds of millions at stake on tours worldwide. Some caddies have become multi-millionaires.
Casual golfers come and go, but it's such an addicting sport it's not going anywhere...take that to the bank.

Dick's is a Big Box retailer...I didn't even know they had pros (teaching pros of course...not touring pros).
I'd imagine the Online Retailers have taken a huge share of their market away. Nothing surprising about that at all.
Hey if the green fees do drop...I will just play more. Gotta love the great outdoors!

It's why I've said handy cap leagues like apa and tap have become so poplar..The generation of if your tired of losing practice and get better is dissolving. It's easier to play in a handy cap league and get a spot. I can't tell you how many apa players in my area are a low number and our happy about it because they win. who cares if they can't put 3 balls together. Thats not all of them of course. some our trying to get better. But not many, We just started a bca 9 ball league this summer and I've seen quite a few mid level apa 9 ball players get quite a bit better quickly when suddenly making a ball doesn't mean anything unless theres a 9 on it lol pressure of playing better competition makes you rise up and become a better player. Not playing a better player and getting spotted 30 balls.

Good segment.

check out the virtual pool thread.. lol there are people who would rather be good at a pool video game then the real thing. They couldn't fathom my comment that I have no problem with the video game .. I'm sure it's realistic and great but if I'm in my home with a laptop with virtual pool and a pool table guess which I choose lol first and foremost I'm a f#$%$# pool player.. I'm playing the real thing before I play a simulation.

Side note for you golf fans. I saw another show about knockoffs. Imitation clubs. Think made in China or Japan. Watch what you buy online. Some look so good the manufacturer can't tell them apart until the cut them open.

During the yrs that I have coined the false economy coupled with the fist pumps a gyrations from Tiger ,golf shot up in popularity , not form the dead but from a stable environment ,, not that both the economy and Tiger have fallen and a return of both highly unlikely golf will fall back to the same levels as before but no way it falls to pools level,, there's still way to much corporate money in golf for that ever to happen

I'm a golfer and a pool player, and both sports are hard.

I don't understand the problem however, unless the problem is getting people interested in both sports.

To be quite honest I don't really know how or why Tiger was able to bring so much money into golf. But he was one guy who for a while tore up fields and dominated.

I also don't think we should be dumbing down either sport to try and get more people playing them. I don't know any golf friends that want to play on a course that's short with 15 inch holes, and I don't think making pool tables with 6" pockets is going to increase interest in the sport so much that something drastic will change.

If Tiger single handedly brought in millions to the golf world I guess pool needs a new dominate player crusher and record smasher to come around to do the same.

Personally I like competition, and I like seeing new faces at the top and good challenges and matches. Seeing Tiger crush the field by 5+ strokes in many tournaments over the years was not that entertaining. It was amazing, but it was not particularly entertaining. Having Tiger, Phil, Ernie, Sergio, all within 1-2 strokes on Sunday and playing well... That's entertaining.

SVB is a dominate player and he even has a handicap that could be used to get him main stream attention. Why is he not some kind of spokesperson for hearing aids or something that can make him a buck as well as bring some attention to the sport.

I just saw Tony Hawk playing himself in a movie and he is just a skateboarder. Except for Miz, when was the last time you saw a name pool player doing a commercial or in a movie? I mean besides the cameos in pool based movies like COM.
