Twas the Night Before the Open

We arrived at the Holiday Inn, the host hotel for the U.S. Open, and the staff greeted us with open arms. Many of the Open players are staying here, but there are quite a few staying at nearby lodging facilities.

BCn was setting up the equipment getting ready for the TV table matches which will be aired live. Ralf Souquet, Danny Diliberto [sp], Carmine Sardo, and Keith McCready had a live chat-fest. I couldn't hear it, but I watched them from afar, and there were lots of laughs and chuckles.

The equipment is Diamond tables with the Simonis Blue Tour cloth and the red-dotted cue-ball. The TV table is a unique Diamond table made out of cocobola [ph] wood, quite beautiful and unique. Format is race to 11, must break from the box, and no soft breaks, meaning 3 balls must pass the side pocket. The Sardo rack will be used with the 9-ball placement on the spot and the 2 ball in the rear.

The venue is beautiful, with elevated seating and padded chairs. There ain't a bad seat in the house. Before the players meeting, there was a complimentary buffet for all in attendance.

There were 48 seeded players and no byes, since it is a full field. The tournament will pay out 98 spots out of 256.

Frankie Hernandez was supposed to play Dennis Hatch, but for some reason Dennis isn't coming and his spot was replaced with Delaware player Kevin West.

Jerry Bento from South Carolina will be matching up with Jose Parica his first round. Don Steele made the trek from Pittsburgh with his lovely wife Paula. His first match, he faces John Schmidt.

AzBilliard's sponsored player Black-Balled was practicing for the big event, and he's looking forward to this tournament and is thrilled to be here.

Danny "Kid Delicious" Basavich is looking GREAT, having slimmed down quite a bit.

Action is already in progress at Q-Masters with Little John playing Ronnie Wiseman EVEN for an undisclosed sum.

There is an international flavor to this year's Open. I saw quite a few players from England. The Canadians are well represented, Luc Salvas, Jeff Kennedy, Jeff White, and MANY others. It was really cool seeing The Russian.

This Open is going to be very special. Everybody is in high spirits, and I predict that every seat in the house will be filled. I can't wait until tomorrow when the festivities begin. Keith's first match is at 7:00 p.m.

Joe Blackburn is providing cue maintenance and repair, and he had a long line of customers. Reed Pierce and Jimmy Wetch were getting their sticks spruced up for combat.

That's about it for now.

HI Jam,

I am very curious to the development of the Dutch in this tournament. Let me know if you have seen a match of Nick v/d Berg or Niels Feijen.

Damn, no Dennis Hatch..... I was really looking forward to seeing him at the Open this year because I really think he had a great chance to win it all. He is playin' great, any idea why he's not showing:?

I know I've said this a million times but what an impressive field, I was looking through the brackets at all my favorite players and the others in their brackets and nobody really had an easy bracket, whoever takes this down is going to have to earn it. Does anyone know what the payouts are going to be with the additional prize money?

Jam,

Thanks for the report. I am really pulling for Lil Jon to do well at the Open. I know there won't be a dull moment with him there.

I'm glad to see Stalev there as well. I only got to see him play once (at the Derby a couple of years ago). If his 9 ball game isn't up to par, I'm sure he will be in one-pocket action at Q-Masters.

Keep us informed on how Keith is progressing, and tell him that we all wish him the best. Also, tell Joe Blackburn I said hello. I haven't seen him since Vegas a couple of years ago.

Have fun, but remember to keep us posted on the event and the action.

Go Keith

Hey JAM,
Give Keith a personal "good luck" from me. I feel a little bad about our tiff from a couple weeks ago. From the brackets, it looks like he may have a rematch against Chris Futrell. That should be good. Thanks for the update.

Wetch

It is good to see Jimmy Wetch back in the pro pool world. Especially after the Derby City a year ago.

Kevin West

I am glad to hear that Kevin West made it in. He is a close personal friend. Sould be a good match up between Frankie and Kevin. Probably dead even.

ANY UPDATES????

Hey, thanks, I really appreciate it.

I lost my match this morning to PJ Massicotte of Canada 11-5. He played great and had the benefit of some rolls. I played good, good enough that it should've been closer, but it's tough to beat a good player who also has the gods on his side. Couple that with some safety play boo-boos on my part, and it equals a big fat loss. You can only miss a safety and sell out so many times before it bites you in the ass. Oh well, I've got one more barrel....

All I can say is that there won't be any 8 packs at the Open like there was in Goldsboro. EVERYBODY'S missing balls - these tables are tough!

BTW, I play again Wednesday at 7pm against the loser of Nick Varner and Dave Hemmah.
