Exactly what is your "Second Shaft" ... and why?

Many custom cue makers provide a second shaft as part of the deal. Others offer you an option to buy one.

Now some of you folks don't bother with a second shaft - and that's cool.
Others simply have to have one.

For me - 40 years ago I got a second shaft from Huebler when I had it refinished and customized.

Fast forward: A few months ago I started buying cues. I wanted to try these new-fangled LD shafts and all. Sooooo ... When I got my Joss and a Schon ... I also bought an OB and a Katana. Different tips. Different diameters. Different ferrules.

I'm coming to the conclusion that I prefer a 12.25 mm .. but working towards smaller. I like a medium tip. I like a cushioned hit - but not "soft". But I digress ...

What did you folks do for getting a second (and I know 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc) shaft and why? Did you want something "better" than the stock shaft? Same thing backup? Or just something different for different situations?

i have always like the shafts of the cue makers i buy from

i do have a regular larry vigus shaft on my 68 inch jc

buy jc is making me two new shafts

i buy extra shafts when i feel like trying something thinner or
longer or stiffer

i have really experimented with a bunch of things
buy the new low deflection shafts have never interested me
i hit a few but i hated the feel

i tried ash shafts and liked them

I have a dedicated player shaft. But for fun, to relieve boredom and to experiment I bought different lengths, tapers , diameters, etc. Mainly Predators and a few OB's. I rarely use the original shaft anymore. In the past the cues that were purchased with 2 shafts...the 2nd shaft has not seen daylight...ever. At this stage should I buy a cue it will only have 1 shaft. Currently I'm using a Revo...that should last a for long stretch....and I swear I won't buy a 2nd one if it becomes available with a different diameter. I just bought a custom cross thread adaptor from NewSheriff so I can use the UniLoc Revo on Schon cues.

Bought my Runde with two 12.75mm shafts. Always like to have two shafts for my playing cue...no good reason why really, other than if I ever lose a tip I'll have a backup. Liked but never loved that setup. Wanted to try a thinner shaft so had Bob build me a 12mm and absolutely loved it. That is my playing shaft now. Later had him take one of the 12.75mm shafts down to 12.25mm to try that. It's close enough to backup my 12mm should th need arise. If I ever get around to it I'd like to get my 12.75mm turned down to 12mm as well, but haven't felt a pressing need to do it yet.

I carry my 12mm playing shaft and 12.25mm backup. The 12.75mm stays home in an extra case.

i always want an extra shaft. it is a small part of the total package cost. someday you need a new tip or lose one and dont have a way to get one quickly so then dont have a stick.
or your shaft warps and its three months wait from your cue maker as he has your butt as well.

but i always get the same size joint and threads for my shafts and butts with whoever makes me a cue. this way i have lots of interchangeable shafts.
