Type of wood to use

The plan is to have Frank Stellman, known as "Sailor", build it. He's been building cues for many years in Racine Wi. He's best known for being the best straight pool player in Chicago back in the 60's/70's. His cues have a trademark flared butt cap.

The South West cue that I've been playing with is the most handsome cue I've ever seen. It has a birdseye handle, tulip butt and points and cocobolo forearm. So I know that tulip looks great w/cocobolo. At least mine does. The tulip in my cue is more orangish than the picture you put up and my cocobolo is more brown than red. I'd like a piece of pinkish tulip, like your pic, and a cocobolo with a redish tint.

The South West cue I've played with and still love is just too valuable to carry around. It's a Franklin cue with nowrap, which is unusual. It has 6 long points, which is very unusual. It has 3 original shafts and it has matching joint protecters. So there are several unusual things that lead to it being a valuable collecters cue and I don't want to be taking it to the tavern 9 ball tourney.

I'm friends with another cue maker who may be reading this and I'd have him make the cue if he would make me one with a slim butt. But........ :)

Thanks very much for your input and especially for the picture of the exact woods I'm thinking about using. The pics really help in developing a clearer mental picture of "my cue" :D I"m pretty excited about this. I have several "custom" cues but not one made for me to my specs. Pretty heady stuff for this hacker and I'm excited.

What part of the country are you located in? Sounds like you have some collecting experience. Have you played with a Sailor? I like the way mine plays just as much as the South West's.

I'd not known of Weston's flared butt...thanks for that. I like the flare. I like to let the cue slide forward in my hand and the flare helps me catch it without closing my grip.

Why don't you have him make the cue like your SW.

It would be interesting to know that if he make it exactly the same if it still plays the same. Most players like the SW for the way that it plays and feels; too bad they can't be enjoyed at some of the places we play. I know what you mean about using a expensive cue in a bar. The possibility of getting banged up or stolen is too high and not worth the risk.
