:D Got to laugh. Me and my buddy stop in a bar for a happy hour beer yesterday. Here's how we played a game. Red cloth, red chalk, Raminwood house cues with condom slide over ferrule/tip, not even glued. And yes :D the big cue ball. Oh yes, real pool at its finest. I lost, we chug our beer and moved on. :D

You seem quite critical of the equipment considering you and buddy were just there for a "happy hour beer".

Your point being?

Oh the horror!

I've visited some areas in the southern U.S. where many neighborhood bars have oversized cue balls, but the bars where they have league and serious players will of course have same size same weight tournament balls.

Up here in the Pacific Northwest, *every* single bar has same size same weight cue balls. (At least in my area.)

The only thing I can figure out is it is the weather. Up here we have bad weather a lot of the time and people find indoor activities to keep them busy. Thus the better equipment. Down south they have good weather a lot of the time, so maybe they don't play pool as much?

Or maybe it's hot and wet and the door is open and the cloth is 10 years old and the balls haven't been cleaned since they were new in 1963 and you need a really big cueball to break out all the clusters playing eight-ball.

The big ball is horrible. The first time I played on a bar table I almost killed myself firing at a 90 deree cut across the rail with that big monster ball. Fortunately it went over my head when it flew back at me in the air.

That's pretty bad but I've seen worse. Torn cloth, one piece of chalk for the whole bar, incomplete sets of balls, you name it:(

I've played in a tourney in a dump here on the north side of Houston where it was leaking water from the roof down onto one of the barboxes. It was a very slow drip, but the water was definitely coming down onto the table. They still made us play on the table (just wanted the quarters i guess). I hate barbox pool, especially wet barbox pool.

I've played on bar tables that had water leaking on them from the roof. They placed a bucket on the table and your partnet held the bucket while you shot and you held the bucket while he shot.

I've played in a bar where the cueball kept getting stuck in the table whenever someone scratched. Instead of getting the cueball back out they just gave you a different cueball, not even the same kind of cueball.

My favorite is one night I was out drinking with some friends and playing pool. I slide the stick too far back while stroking and the ferrule and tip just slid right off the end of the cue. Everyone starts laughing because of the stellar equipment. I pick up the tip/ferrule of the table, slide it back on and run out. It was probably still the best stick in the house.

I play regularly on 9 ft tables at the pool hall and on a bar box at my local pub.

The pub table has simonis 860 cloth (changed every 4-6 months), Aramith Super Pro balls, and a same size/ weight Aramith magnetic cueball. The rail cushions are practically brand new, having been replaced about four months ago. The cloth is vacuumed, brushed, and cleaned with Quick Clean and a microfiber cloth on a daily basis.

If truth be told, the barbox at the pub is kept in better shape than most of the tables at the local pool hall.

The house cues suck, but then again just about all the better players use their own cues. The house cues are there for the bangers and casual players. It doesn't make too much sense to get really good house cues because the bangers will have them in piss poor condition in no time at all.

I love to play pool and I have just as much fun playing on a bar box in good shape, with a good cueball as on any other size table in good shape.

The bar owners who use cheap cloth and hardly ever change it, and who still use the oversize cueball are limiting the amount of income they can generate from pool players. It's the old "penny wise / pound foolish" thing.

My worst experience would have to be playing on a bar box with an uneven floor. The table was level now! thanks to being proped up on one end. That was fun, depending on what side of the table i'm shooting from the table was either up to my knees or above my waist :) :)
