Pool is not paying winner like a real sport, win one PGA Major, and make millions.

In other news, water is wet.

This problem of people devoting life to a Sport that has no real income potential................Sort of not a good game plan.

Maybe Pool is like owning a Hobby Business, that never show a real return on investment, just breaks even even month, and owner enjoy being an urban camper living in their auto,.

Posting on AzBilliards doesn’t make you any money but you do it anyway.

You are super judgmental about others spending their time the way they see fit. Let people live their lives.

Just sharing my opinion, have done the Tournament thing before. Gave up on the process, when promised or advertised ads were not paid, and the expenses did not justify the the time, trouble, travel cost, drinks etc. For winning bottom line next to zero.

Don’t like the format, handicaps, rules including the j pattern break, shot clock, and eligibility for nationals rules. I thought I would like the 30 minute match rule and one match at a time thing. I don’t. I really don’t like anything about it except it’s pool and 8 ball. There are plenty of people who disagree with me and I recognize its personal preference. But I don’t prefer it.
What is a J pattern break??

you rack the balls giving yourself the rack that gives you the results you want. he likely will try to do the same if smart.
he has the opportunity to challenge your rack and make you change it. as you do to his.

UPL requires this pattern for every rack. Number placement doesn't matter but solids/stripes need to be in these positions.

Also, the 8 is on the spot.

Play in one (or go watch) if you have a chance, the vibe is really good and happy. Part of it (or maybe most of it) is the tournaments themselves are incredibly well run and managed from what I’ve seen.

I hope they can continue to produce these tournaments. The league seems to be doing really well in my area, in large part due to the time limits.

I plan on it, eventually. They just started here in Boise back in January but I was unable to join the session and in about 3 months I'm leaving the area and will be quite mobile for the next 3-5 years but, when I do land somewhere it will be somewhere with a UPUSA league, that is a guarantee.

I think one big reason that this format is becoming so popular is the quick pace. When I was shooting in leagues my favorite league format was 2 man teams. We played 4 individual games, 2 against each opposing team member rotating breaks, 2 doubles games and 2 scotch doubles games. You were involved in a game for the majority of the session, there was very little just sitting around as a spectator. It took less than 2 hours and you were done. Unfortunately when the 2 man league ended so did my time at pool league. If UPUSA was in my area it might be something I would try.

The fast pace is what draws me to it. I generally shoot fast so feel I would have an advantage.

I wonder if the US leagues don't implement time controls because the whole point is to keep people at the bar. Instead we get five-minute coaching time outs so the 2 can miss to some other pocket.

The leagues I've played in since 1979 had only about 25% dead time. Before that, it was two games of eight ball in three hours.

I have a feeling it's because of people simply not wanting to, or not having the technology to, keep time. UPL supplies the tablets for the matches which solves this problem.
