Ultra Skin Tips

Just had an Ultra Skin Soft Tip installed on my Predator Z Shaft... A very, very, very good alternative to Kamuii Black!!! Tip shapes fantastically!!! Has excellent grip on the cue ball, takes chalk very well & no mushrooming.

For those of you who think Predator Shafts don't have a lot feel, try installing a fiber pad under the tip. You will be very pleased with the results, shaft gains a very crisp hit as a result with good feed back.

See, I had the opposite experience with them, I tried one as a replacement on my Tiger shaft and it was the worst thing I ever took a shot with. Put a Sniper tip back on (which is what the xld shaft came with) and the world was OK again. I guess to each their own, glad it works well for you!

Sniper tip fans are tough customers when it comes to change.
Not as tough as the Kamui Black guys, but they're tough.
This tip thing is so interesting, I'm going to buy a Shore D hardness tester just so I can compare a bunch of stuff.
Although I am a huge UltraSkin tip fan, I also like and use a lot of Tiger tips.
My favorite is Tiger Onyx, can't get into the Sniper  but there are a lot of Sniper fans here on AZ.

I have a Schon Ltd with a first gen Z shaft. I'm installing an UltraSkin today. Think I'll try the pad.

LOL my buddy hit like 3 balls with my Tiger cue and gave it back saying how the hell can you can make a ball with this thing? In my mind the Sniper tip is the only tip that I can actually feel it gripping the ball. It sounds crazy I know, maybe I'm crazy.....

Funny thing is here locally I am the only person to complain about the ultra skins, my friend who owns a cue repair business has done a ton of them and I was the only person who came back and said take it off.

I've gotten 100% positive feedback on the UltraSkins so far. Not so much with Sniper. I ended up selling my last three Snipers to another cue repair guy since none of my customers seemed to be interested.

Moori III is still the most popular tip I install though.

Currently I'm using the Everest tip that came with the Z2. It lets me control whitey like my medium tailsman water buffalo that I know and love so much but without the 'feedback'.

I've never tried a super soft tip but I do miss the 'feedback' that my plain ol meucci shaft gave me with the tailsman tip. Maybe I'll see if Dick has one I can try out next time I'm down at the pool hall. I'd want to try before I buy.

I thought I read where the pad gave a softer hit. Am I wrong on this?

I just bought a Lambros cue. I had such a hard time with the tip. I'm not even sure what it was. This weekend I switched to an Ultra skin medium, my first one as I am a Kamui black guy, and I absolutely love it. It changed the way the Lambros played. I was unsure about the Lambros until I changed the tip...now I love it. So I guess it pretty much means I like the ultra skin tip.

Would you call the Ultra Skins the best general tip for the average player? They don't want to spend a fortune but just want a good tip and ask what you recommend. What do you usually put on in terms of hardness?

Ultra Skin are a good alternative

I have had a few (not a lot) of trouble with each of the Tiger tips (including Sniper) delaminating when trimming and shaping. Almost everyone that I play with has tried the Ultraskin and liked it. I haven't heard them say how much more they liked it from Moori and Kamui (original non-black), but I have seen plenty on AZB.

The only thing that is universal about tips is that they are personal. Each player has their own preference. However, the quality depends on how well they last, how they shape (and keep their shape), and how much they mushroom. BTW, Ultraskin has more than just one tip. If you didn't like one, you can ask yourself if it was too hard or soft and try another hardness.

Good tip for any player open to change

I would suggest an Ultraskin to any player like this or anyone that isn't attached to name brand status. But, if a player says, "I love a Sniper (or any other tip)." I would not suggest changing. Because these cases will always make an unhappy customer. Players that are set on one piece of equipment or one way of playing will only accept change when they are looking for change. They will blame any shortcomings on the change.

LePro used to be the Standard

Initially, I was surprised at how soft the LePro tip was rated. However, as I look back on when this was my favorite, I remember how long it took me to work down the tip to where I liked how it played. It got much harder as it went down. But, I loved how they hit when they were really close to the ferrule! Cracked a few ferrules that way also. And it was really tedious trimming the mushrooming and getting through the softer times as I pounded the tip (while shooting) into hardness. I didn't know about pressing the tip before installing back then. Today, most tips play the same until they get really, really low to the ferrule.

Hate to be the one to stick out from the crowd but I for one disliked UltraSkin.

One of the local repair guys got a shipment and offered to install it for free on mine for a review.

He also installed one on his stick and we both came to the same consensus. I have to admit going into it that I had very high hopes for the tip as I love Kamui Soft and SS.

At first the tip was fine but I found after a few play sessions that it mushroomed.

This is to be expected considering it was a soft tip so I just fixed it and moved on.

From there I found that the tip itself got glazed over (please note that I am always very careful to never touch my tips and I always take the chalk off with a towel before I put my stick back in the case).

It also had a difficult time holding Master's chalk and I found that I was miscuing on regular shots.

One shot in particular made me get the tip changed right away.

On the shot I hit centerball and miscued. I looked at the tip and there was a miscue mark with no chalk in the center of the tip not on the edge.

I don't know if we just got a bad lot of the tips but I am back with Kamui Black Soft.

I just had an Ultraskin hard installed and was able to use it for a few minutes before league started.

Played with it during league and I'll attest that it changed me from a Talisman fan to an Ultraskin fan.

I thought I read where the pad gave a softer hit. Am I wrong on this?

I had a new ferrule put on my original Z2 and due to a crack being in the shaft my Repair guy put the pad on with a Kamuii Black Soft that I requested. Man that shaft is hitting more solid then any Predator Shaft I ever shot with. The CB almost jumps off the tip very crisp hit.

On my back up Z2 I had a Predator Soft put on back in Dec/Jan and I've not been able to get used to it, play's way softer than the Kamuii Black Soft, too much spin throwing cut's off line etc. etc.

So being that I gave up on the Predator Tip I was going to get the Kamuii Black Soft installed yesterday and he suggested the Ultra Skin, I had read good reviews on it so I decided to save some money and give it a try, with the Fiber Pad also being installed. Low and behold the back up now has the same hit a feedback feel as the main player.

So to me it feels like a firmer, more solid hit.

Like I said before, the Kamui Black guys are the toughest>>
I've even heard of Kamui double soft guys comparing UltraSkin double hards, just for kicks.

This Kamui Black thing is not going to ease up anytime soon.
For the sake of full disclosure, I sold a couple of Cognoscenti cues to a friend, the tips were old, but the cues played great.
He had all 4 shafts changed to new Moori mediums and 6 months later he said he couldn't play with the Cogs and traded them back.
A few months after that he wanted the Cogs again, I couldn't play with them so we made another deal.
He switched all 4 shafts to Kamui Black soft and the Cogs play great again.

amen, brother. i put on an ultraskin medium trying to save a few dollars over my kamui black SS. obviously they are not the same hardness but i thought i would try it out based on the positive reviews. i did not like the USMed at all.

it's probably a fine tip but i was so used to the way the KBSS played. the KBSS just grabs the ball in a different way and puts alot more horizontal spin on the cue ball. so it changed my angles altogether. i didn't like it. plus i've been using the TOI and i had to totally recalibrate that.

tom is a good guy but i just got too used to the kamui that i can't get away from it now. the ultraskins quality wise may equal the kamui but they do not play the same, not even close. so don't think you will just simply replace a BLACK tip with a black tip and the only difference is the cost.

The only UltraSkins I've installed have been mediums. IMO, they're a bargain. I think Tom could probably twice as much and still sell them easily.
