Hello to all,

With great sadness, I report to you that Allen Gilbert died peacefully early yesterday morning, July 15, 2006, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Los Angeles, after battling a long illness. He was 77. As you know Allen was seven times United States National 3-Cushion Billiard Champion and four times “Champ of Champs”. He was also the author of Systematic Billiards, a renowned billiards instructor, a charter and life member of the United States Billiards Association, and a friend of innumerable players and others in the billiards community. During his many playing years he was also a BWA contract player and played on the world tour.

So so sorry to hear this news. Allen was the pre-eminent Three Cushion player in the United States for many, many years. I don't know how many times he won the national championship, but probably more than ten times.

He also hustled pool and billiards under the name of Al Gold. He loved to play for money and I don't know if anyone ever beat him for cash playing billiards. He was a speed above Shorty or any of the East Coast players. IMHO

I watched him give Marvin five on twenty and destroy him for some serious cash (like 500 a pop). When Fats came to town (L.A.) Allen quietly asked him if he would like ten going to fifty for any amount. No game!

All the top pool players admired Allen, because he was never afraid to get up and play, or bet on his matches. He was one of the boys. And Allen was a sharp cookie, who had a lot of knowledge to share. I believe he was the source of much information that Eddie Robin used in his Three Cushion book.

That is sad news. Thanks for the stories Jay. I did not know that about Mr. Gilbert. He was a true living legend.
