universal smartshaft adapter question

Hello,

Does anybody know if the 5/16 x 14 flat faced adapter for the universal smartshaft will fit into a Joss/schon butt? Also, how dangerous is it to replace an adapter without the special tool?

Yes the thread will fit, however both have piloted joints not flat faced,but it should work ok,jmho.No tool needed thread the adapter to the shaft as snug as possible by hand then put the shaft on the butt and tighten it down.P.S. the adapter should be glued in.good luck

I checked my shaft after your reply, looking to see if I could remove the initial joint adapter, but I didn't see any seam. I emailed Seyberts.com and confirmed they had installed a permanent joint to the shaft, so it's a no go.

Thanks for the information anyway. If anybody is interested Seyberts.com is selling the remainder of their stock for $125. They have a 5/16th x 18 piloted joint, a lucasi quick release joint and a two striped quick release joint (generic? I don't know).

Even though it didn't fit my tempest cue, I was fortunate enough to have a lucasi hybrid with a wood to wood quick release joint to test the shaft. It's too bad they got bought out (by Lucasi?). Nice shaft. Firm, medium hit with a small amount of give at the end. No vibration, even at high stroke speeds and was fairly light. Very accurate. A bit more so than my hybrid shaft, which is the same design except for the carbon or some other reinforcing fabric material at the bottom of the shaft, that is missing on the hybrid. I think it's a better shaft than the hybrid, though to be fair, the hybrid had a 5th ave tip that I installed off of another cue ( not a repair man) and the universal claimed to have a moori on it from Seyberts. Looked a lot darker and I thought it hit different, but was a very nice tip either way.

Bill, I thought the original intent was to be able to use the same shaft on butts with different types of joint screws -- just buy multiple inserts/adapters. No?

When I bought a Universal Smartshaft from you years ago (at Valley Forge), you said nothing about gluing in the insert.

I was told the same thing and I bought 2 of them.
I was told the whole idea behind the shaft was just switch out the joint adapters to what you need and you were good to go. The problem was I guess nobody looked into the plastic adapters fitting to tight and with use the heat build up made them almost impossible to remove from the shaft
if a change was needed or wanted right away. I ruined several adapters just trying to unscrew them from the shaft when I was done playing finding out the hard way that the concept was great but the product was poor.

I thought the shaft played very well and was well constructed. Did you mean the product was poor only in the joint adapter or as a whole? I was hearing stuff online that they had a special adapter changing tool and that it was dangerous to change the joint without it.

On another note, I was curious if any of you had any comments on the durability of the ferrule after prolonged use after several years?

I would guess they were talking about the joint adaptor. Once on they were very hard to change out without wrecking the collar material. If there is a special tool use it or ive used a strip of rubber over adaptor with house hold tool.
I used one for roughly 2 years straight I found no issues with anything as long as I wasnt changing out adaptor.

I had a smarthshaft LS and I bought all kinds of the adapters to use with all my cues with different thread pins and used them all with no problem. I used a craftsman strapwrench to remove them and tighthen them just snug, but with alittle never seize on the plastic threads.Just ahd to be careful not to go to tight But I seen a bunch of people over tighten and crack them and the only fix was to epoxy them in and then it was only good for that thread pin. I ended up selling shaft and 5 adapters on ebay for like $100 years ago <<< ED

The original intent was that the adapters for different joint styles made it easier for dealers not to stock so many shafts. A player could walk in and leave with a shaft for almost any cue.

It never occurred to me that players would want to switch shafts between butts all the time.

I designed the adapters to be glued in and increase the strength of the joint area of the shafts.
