Unmarked 60" cue weird veneer strip? Handle

Bought an oddity, and curious about anyone's thoughts on what it is.

I bought it based on some bad pics where I could just see enough to think it could be an old Schuler. Now that it is here, I am doubting Schuler due to the pin being completely recessed in the joint sleeve, no exposed wood on the shaft collar face, not marked anywhere, and unsure whether this bumper would have ever been used.

Did I just buy some dudes high school shop project?

The wrap area actually appears to me to be veneer strips, but I don't know I should trust my eyes, no idea how feasible that would be. For sure nothing I have ever seen before.....which probably speaks to it being a bad idea... Anyway I think k one might suspect painted on but I am sure I see actual grain running with the spiral.

The "rings" below the wrap also seem to be the veneer material, but bubbling up a bit. The shaft collar has a different color trim ring, but I think that might actually be an original design choice as it matches the brown in the handle exactly.

Anyway, welcome any thoughts anyone has.

Thanks for the direction. I will do so.

I'm also kinda curious what anyone else would do with the cue if it were theirs. Even knowing nothing of where it came from, I would put a little money into getting the bubbling in the buttsleeve fixed at least.......but I don't know that would even be possible to restore it.

I would get it refinished. I think it would look great with a modern finish.

You’re being too hard on it. It’s an old cue and you have to look at it in that context.

To me, it seems like someone was experimenting with ways other than linen or leather to dress-up a full splice.

If you want to trade for a New-old-stock 90’s It‘s George 2x4, let me know.
