Unnnbelievable......

it's bad sportsmanship and a total disregard for the sport and overwhelming concern for the money. i'm sure the guy felt some remorse for it, but the difference in prize money made up for whatever guilt ensued.

i was playing a tournament one time, and ran the rack until an easy straight in on the 9. my opponent (who was inexperience and young) picked up the rack and set it on the table. of course this was a forfeiture of the game so i just poked the ball anywhere and missed. he instantly dropped the rack on the floor and got down to take his shot. i told him "no", and that he forfeited the game as soon as he got the rack. unfortunately, the TD wasn't there, this kid was being a little whiny B****, so i let him make the ball and have the win. everyone in the room heard the story that day though.

This is what Steve Lipsky said to me in a similar situation:

The way to handle a situation is simple and I'm being dead serious. The next time someone gives you the no-ref-no-foul policy, shoot directly at the 9-ball and pocket it and say, "I WIN!" If he protests, tell him he should have called a ref.

Unbelivable

What a low life. I would of called the Tournament Director over and told him he said "No Ref No Foul". The Director could of polled the audience and verified he said "No Ref No Foul" (which itself admits there was a foul). The Tournament Directors I have seened would of at least forfieted that game and told this low life any more stunts like that and your out of the tournament.

Reminds me of a black and white 'police catch thief' comedy in the 70s. The thugs got away and the witnesses were brought back to the station to match pictures. They were given all kinds of facial features from eyebrows to chins, and finally it came out a creature just like this one..

that sucks

normally, newbies, inexperienced players who are at the beginning of competing, or, players who don't know it's cheating use the excuse, "you didn't have a ref" which means, "i probably did foul, but it goes to the shooter." tournament directors can ask the audience if the players cannot agree. sometimes in these situations, we don't think to call a ref over because we think, "well, the ref wasn't here, what are they gonna do?" but, they can ask the crowd and/or talk about the shot to try to see why one thinks it's a foul and the other doesn't to maybe come to a conclusion. most TDs do not just come over and say, "it goes to the shooter." they try and find the real solution.

tough break, eric. sorry you went through this.
