Somebody make me a offer that I can't refuse. I've never seen a JW with a 5/16-18 pin and a solid black collar. I guess that makes this one either rare or a fake. Anyway it just sits in a case so I'm gonna let it go.

Butt: 14.76 ounces and rolls straight. True Hoppe style with no bumper. Unknown re-finish.

Shaft #1: appears to have come with the cue. Finish on the collar is in rough shape. 3.96 ounces, 13.4mm with ivory ferrule and unknown tip. Very minor wobble when rolled but major wobble when screwed on the butt. I will re-face it if requested.

Shaft #2: 4.16 ounces, 13mm with phenolic ferrule and unknown tip. Rolls straight on and off the cue.

MURRAY, I HAD ONE THAT WAS THE SAME EXCEPT MINE HAD A DELRIN CAP. IT PLAYED PRETTY WELL. MINE HAD THE OLD MICARTA ON IT TOO, SO I GUESS THAT'S ANOTHER DIFFERENCE. LOOKS LIKE A NICE CLASSIC YOU GOT THERE.

JW 5/16 x 18

I think there was a spell that Bill used that thread. I know I ended up with 3 of them in a trade from Joe Farhat when he had the Velvet Rail in Lansing. I've still got one shaft I use with an old Viking butt.

I bought mine at the Velvet Rail in the early 70's and it looks the same as this cue with the exception of the Hoppe ring.

In cues I have seen,
5/16X14 acme
3/8X8 acme
3/8X10 acme
7/16X10 and 11 acme
OOPS! I just learned something new, there are two different Acme's. Acme-G (general) and Acme-C (centralizing). I was thinking of the latter and I guess you were refering to the Acme-G type. Sorry for the confusion.

I have a 89 JossWest that is 5/16x14 thread but with very thick pitch so that my Predator shaft won't screw on .. is this Acme?

Square threads, approximately .523 O.D.

The acme was definately 5/16X14.
I had a Joss West cue that had an ACME 5/16x14 joint pin and I don't understand why a cue maker would use this type of thread over the standard 5/16x14 thread pins used by so many other cue makers. When I bought the cue i'd never heard of this type of 5/16x14 joint pin being used on a pool cue and I wanted to use my 5/16x14 predator shafts on the cue, but I found out after I bought it that the predator shafts wouldn't work with this type of joint pin. I couldn't come up with a solution to make my predator shafts work on the cue and I even considered changing the 5/16x14 acme joint pin to a standard 5/16x14 thread and I was advised against this because I was told that it would de-value my cue. I decided to sell the cue and move on. The sad part is I got a good deal on the JW cue and I liked it, but since i've adjusted my pool game to predator shafts I didn't want to deal with the headaches that the ACME threads were causing.

Yup .. that's it. Do you know if I can get my existingpredatory shaft with 5/16x14 thread with the right tap to "open up" the thread or do I have to get a new insert?

You can't use the existing insert, You could try contacting Mr. Stroud.

If you were to call Predator now with this problem they would point you in the right direction.
