Unwrapping a cue

This question may have been asked before, but I've been wondering this for awhile: is it possible to convert a linen-wrapped cue to a wrapless cue? And I don't mean clearcoating the wrap. I guess what I mean is, what's under the wrap? Is it just wood? If so, why can't you just take off the linen and lacquer (I know lacquer may not be the right word but you know what I'm getting at) the wood? I'm curious because I have a stick or two that have wraps that I would like to convert if possible.

The wrap is around .020 each side.
That's a lot of wood taken out.
You might as well have the wrapped sealed and sprayed .

Rich, it takes a lot of material to fill in the space that the wrap takes up.
You would be better off to leave your cue as it is and find another that fits your tastes.
What cue do you have that you want this done to?

The wood under the wrap a lot of times is either not really figured, i.e. straight grain maple/hard rock maple....or it may be some type of laminated handle. This may definitely affect the way you want your cue to look. Some cuemakers use purpleheart....so that might be a good surprise, but I don't think that would be the case.

It's a pechauer. I forget the exact model; it's in storage right now. It has black with white spec linen and just lately I don't like the wrap. I just think the cue would look much better and feel better in hand if it were wrapless. I don't know anything really about how cues are made but I thought if I could just get the handle in curly maple or even just stain regular maple to look like bloodwood or something . . . it would be a better stick. I really like the way it plays though. I guess 'adding' wood to it would probably screw that up.

Pechauer makes some very nice cues.
They are not talked about much on this forum but IMHO are one of the best made production cues of them all.

Would you consider a leather wrap?
There is some very nice patterned leather and also some good exotic skins available.
I would advise you to sell or trade the cue for something that you like better. Or keep it and buy another one.
What you want done is not an easy job and could be costly.
You might not like the results.

Ah. Thank you. It was just a thought. And I suspected it would be difficult/impoosible, or I would ahve heard about someone having it done. I'll probably think about getting her coated. I do like the way she plays.

You wouldn't know if JP makes a wrapless would you?

While I'm at it, thanks to all of you for your time and consideration. It's much appreciated.

Another suggestion would be what I consider to be the next best thing to a wrapless cue for wrapless cue lovers, and that is a Stack Leather wrap. If you're not familiar with them, here is a picture of one I did on a Predator break cue.

IMO the "feel" is a little better than a wrapless cue.

Cuedog that stacked leather looks very nice on that cue.
I assume you cut a wrap groove into the cue?

Since you think it would look better without a wrap. You might consider deciding what color you would have stained your plain maple underwrap and then put on a wrap of that color and then clear over the wrap. Example put on a solid black if you like that and clear over it so it feels like wrapless. Or put on a white wrap and then dye it to color desired and clear over it.

Thank you Willee. This cue came with a linen wrap, so I had less work to do.

Just wanted to point out that even though on the forearm side, it appears to be uneven, that is the way the photo came out. The wrap is perfectly flush on both sides. I received a couple of PMs concerning that so I thought I'd clear it up.
