Before I get to the straight-pool tournament at Bill and Billie's in Arnold, Maryland, which is in progress, I thought I'd pass on a little pool smut!
I remember reading that Francisco Bustamante and Scott Frost matched up playing one-pocket EVEN in Norfolk, Virginia, right after the Masters tournament at Q-Masters. The marathon match ended several days ago, with Bustie pocketing the cash! He was last seen hopping on a plane to a new destination.
A veteran world-beater was playing golf with Corey Deuel this past week. Word on the street has it that Corey plays golf like machine, hitting the ball well over 300 at the drop of a hat!
Lots of strong players on the East Coast currently. The $15,000-added Big Apple in New York City is right around the corner, August 11-14, with the $25,000-added Joss Tour Season Finale at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York, immediately thereafter, August 17-21, 2005. While many big guns will be at the Turning Stone, I will be staying tuned to the Sigel versus Jones match to occur on August 20th at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. There are currently many pool players with visions of financial security dancing in their heads with the prospect of winning $200,000 or $300,000 on the IPT Tour.
Back to the 14.1 tournament in Arnold, I heard this morning from Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh who gave me a briefing. Seventeen players showed up. First place is $800 and a paid entry fee to an annual straight-pool event later this year in New Jersey. They may try to finish up the tournament today as opposed having it continue tomorrow since the field of 32 didn't fill.
The always mysterious Gerry Slivka was forfeited, even though he was paid up. I had thought Slivka was a favorite to win this event since he had been practicing straight pool recently and ran a cool 275 in front of a crowd of onlookers.
Ryan got beat his first round of this double-elimination event, racing to 125, by Buddy Chilton (sp), 125 to 93. However, there's a $100 bonus for the player who has the highest run in the tournament. Ed Deska (sp) had been the leader with a 56-ball run, but Ryan just beat him in his next round with a high run of 58 -- so far. Out of all the pocket billiard games, Ryan's a straight pool lover!
Bill and Billie's hometown champion Rick Morieno and Ryan faced off in the third round with Rick pulling out ahead early, 105 to Ryan's 49. However, the Genie Man didn't give up and managed to beat him, 125 to 107.
Wanting to know who's the favorite in this straight pool tournament, I inquired of Ryan, "Who's the toughest player there?," to which he immediately responded, "NOBODY -- ME!!"
Now, that's what I call positive thinking.
