Update on 14.1 in Arnold and...

Before I get to the straight-pool tournament at Bill and Billie's in Arnold, Maryland, which is in progress, I thought I'd pass on a little pool smut! :p

I remember reading that Francisco Bustamante and Scott Frost matched up playing one-pocket EVEN in Norfolk, Virginia, right after the Masters tournament at Q-Masters. The marathon match ended several days ago, with Bustie pocketing the cash! He was last seen hopping on a plane to a new destination. ;)

A veteran world-beater was playing golf with Corey Deuel this past week. Word on the street has it that Corey plays golf like machine, hitting the ball well over 300 at the drop of a hat!

Lots of strong players on the East Coast currently. The $15,000-added Big Apple in New York City is right around the corner, August 11-14, with the $25,000-added Joss Tour Season Finale at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York, immediately thereafter, August 17-21, 2005. While many big guns will be at the Turning Stone, I will be staying tuned to the Sigel versus Jones match to occur on August 20th at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. There are currently many pool players with visions of financial security dancing in their heads with the prospect of winning $200,000 or $300,000 on the IPT Tour. :D

Back to the 14.1 tournament in Arnold, I heard this morning from Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh who gave me a briefing. Seventeen players showed up. First place is $800 and a paid entry fee to an annual straight-pool event later this year in New Jersey. They may try to finish up the tournament today as opposed having it continue tomorrow since the field of 32 didn't fill.

The always mysterious Gerry Slivka was forfeited, even though he was paid up. I had thought Slivka was a favorite to win this event since he had been practicing straight pool recently and ran a cool 275 in front of a crowd of onlookers.

Ryan got beat his first round of this double-elimination event, racing to 125, by Buddy Chilton (sp), 125 to 93. However, there's a $100 bonus for the player who has the highest run in the tournament. Ed Deska (sp) had been the leader with a 56-ball run, but Ryan just beat him in his next round with a high run of 58 -- so far. Out of all the pocket billiard games, Ryan's a straight pool lover! ;)

Bill and Billie's hometown champion Rick Morieno and Ryan faced off in the third round with Rick pulling out ahead early, 105 to Ryan's 49. However, the Genie Man didn't give up and managed to beat him, 125 to 107.

Wanting to know who's the favorite in this straight pool tournament, I inquired of Ryan, "Who's the toughest player there?," to which he immediately responded, "NOBODY -- ME!!"

Now, that's what I call positive thinking. :D Straight pool update courtesy of the Genie Man, as depicted below! :p

This just in...

The tournament will continue tomorrow, with four players remaining. Richmond's Dave Hunt the Dentist and Wayne Dean from Laurel, MD are in the winners' bracket, and Ryan McCreesh will play the winner of Frank Colby and Ed Deska (ph) in the losers' bracket. Ryan defeated local BCA-certified instructor Doug Sharpe, 135 to 31 en route to the semi-finals.

I wonder what's going on up at the Hampton Ridge event in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Anybody know?

Jen, do you know what time they are starting tomorrow. I'm hoping to make it there to watch some of the action. :D

Hi, Rich! :) I'm not sure what time they start up today, Sunday, but I'd guess it's at noon. Give them a call just to make sure before you head out there, though. Hope you and Cathy are doing well! Looking forward to seeing you both at the Open!

There's nothing like the power of positive thinking. Ryan McCreesh won the 14.1 tournament at Bill & Billie's in Arnold, MD. He pocketed not only $800 for first place, but he got received $100 as a bonus for the highest run of the event, which was the 58-ball run he made yesterday. Plus, he gets a FREE entry fee to the straight pool tournament to be held at Comet Billiards in Parsippany, New Jersey, on September 1st through October 2nd. :)

The finals match was a race to 150 between Ryan and Dave Hunt the Dentist from Richmond, Virginia, and it went something like this. Ryan surged forward with Dave making a few balls, score 104 to 3. You'd think Ryan would be feeling comfy, but the Dentist came back strong, climing his way to 105 points. The Genie Man then surged forward and got up to 144, with Dave holding onto his 105 points. When it was all over, the score was Ryan 150, Dave Hunt 128.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it! Congratulations to the Genie Man!

It was good to have a hit but I could barely keep my eyes open from the jet lag it proabbly came a couple of days to early for me. Still plenty of time to get ready for big apple and no excuses if I lose early int hat one (unless I get bit by a rabid dog just before my match or soemthing of course ;-)

Thanks for checking in, The One! :) Sorry you didn't have a good tournament, but believe me, it happens to the best of 'em all the time. That's a pretty good-sized field, 59 players. Any more Hampton Ridge happenings? How's Danny Basavich making out?

Get plenty of rest for the Big Apple. It begins Thursday on Queens Boulevard West. What's great is that the hotel is located right across the street within walking distance, too. Good luck, and keep us posted! ;)

Which hotel is that? Last yr the "host" hotel was up the street a couple of miles... it was a tad too far to be walking. I recall catching a cab to the pool room last yr.

Congrats to both Ryan & Dave for what sounds like a great pool shooting weekend. ;)

Yes please tell about the hotel, Im actually looking for somewhere now because Im staying on my friends floor at the moment which I don't want to do come Thursday! (it hurts LOL) Anyway, anyhelp on hotel and pool hall location would be useful as I have spent the last hour trying to find info on both without much success

The One, La Quinta Inn is the name of the hotel for the Masters tournament.

I took this off the AzBilliards Main Page:

La Quinta Inn has provided the players of the Big Apple with special rates. They are located right across from Masters Pool Hall. For reservations: anyone can call 1-800-531-5900 or 718-729-8775.

As Timberly posted, last year and the year before, the host hotel was a few miles up Queens Boulevard West. I did not care for the room. It was old and kind of creepy. I felt uncomfortable with the hookers and johns in the front lobby every single night. The pool player's rate then was $159 plus tax, and that was considered a "good deal."

I have never stayed at La Quinta Inn, but it has got to better than the one they used in previous years. It is nice that it is within walking distance.

Lodging in NYC is expensive. If you are traveling on a budget, you may be better off staying at your friend's place to save monies. JMHO, FWIW!

The One, I just got a call this morning from an attendee who is going to New York City for the Big Apple. He said that the pool player's rate at La Quinta Inn is $116 per night plus tax. That is an EXCELLENT room rate for New York City (IMO). Just an FYI! :p

Hi JAM. This is a wonderful event put on by Jack Colavita and Bill and Marsha Haley of Comet. It's my favorite event of the year, bar none. The equipment is top-notch and the tournament is directed with a nice touch of class.

Will Keith be playing?

Hi, Steve! Comet Billiards in Parsippany is one of the finest pool rooms I have ever seen. High ceilings, beautiful decor with colors of blood-red burgundy and Hunter green, and ample room between the well-maintained GCs, truly a pool player's dream room.

The other day Keith and Ryan McCreesh got to barking about straight pool, and so I asked Keith, "When is the last time you played straight pool, and what is your high run?" A la Mosconi, he responded, "I ran 150 and then quit because I got tired." (LOL). :p

If we're able to make that event, I'd sure like to go. I have only visited Comet Billiards once, but I am quite impressed. AND I do like their juke box! It's not loud, but they have decent music playing in the background, not the modern-day head-banging percussion tunes.

I got a kick out of the owner's name being Bill Haley, reminding me of Bill Haley and the Comets! :D

My mate bought one last time and it would last about 30 mins before going flat, it had a slow puncher. The funny thing was after me a crazy Italian (really crazy!) friend of hours stayed at my friends and he would wake up in the middle of the night fighting with this thing (so Im told) and swearing in italain etc! He wouldn't admit defeat and bought a puncture kit and even tried band aids LOL nothing worked of course! So I didn't both with it this time LOL

But thanks he he :-)
