Update on Denver pool rooms

I was at Hanks today(38th & Sheridan)and there were a few of us from Charlies there gathered together and a handful from Billiards Ink gathered together it was kind of like two tribes. Word is from a former employee is that Billiards Ink will reopen when they can get a new liqueur license in someones name. Kind of sketchy info buts thats all I could get. I spoke to Hank about having Thurs night and Sunday day tournaments like Billiards Ink had and he wanted nothing to do with them.Hank is under the impression that pool players are cheap and spend no money at these tournaments and they wind up costing him money. Damn shame that the "players" have gotten this reputation. I see so many drinking water instead of a beer or a coke. We need to spend a couple of bucks while playing or what is the sense of a room putting on tournaments?

Just so ya'll know Rack'em is willing to discuss pretty much any tournament that was previously being held at either Billiards Ink or Charlies, we are happy to take on any pool league teams that were left in the cold and have done so numerous times.

We also already have pretty good tournaments on Friday and Saturday nights. Right now these tournaments are on Hiatus until Saturday the first due to the holidays.

Feel free to come in anytime after the first to talk to me (Brandie) and we can see what we can do for you. Being someone that plays pool and has been around for rooms that constantly open and close every few months I know how much it sucks not having a steady place to play, and a place to build leagues with cofidence that the venue will be open the next week.

Hank is right.
He's not the only room owner that does more business with his regular crowd vs. the tournament crowd.
It's OK once and a while but twice a week gets kind of expensive.

On a funny note, I find it hilarious to see all of the Table Steaks / BI and Charlies guys walking into Hanks one after the other.
Hank probably wishes they would re-open so he can take a break.

It's tramatic when two poplular rooms close on the same day.

:lmao: This whole situation makes me laugh. I don't blame Hank. I wouldn't want that bunch of unemployed hooligans in my place either.

Out of curiosity, is Tony still living in the basement at TS or did they shut the power off on the place?

Hanks has been pretty busy since he is the only room on the West side of Denver.I only hope he is smart enough to capitalize on this and figure out a way to expand this golden opportunity that has been placed in his lap to nurture. When I asked him about the Thurs night tournaments he said " I used to have them and they took them away so now they can keep them' That seems more like sour grapes then seeing a way to expand his business. But what do I know I play with a Lucasi cue. And I can beat 98% of you with it. LOL.

That Lucasi is way too much cue for you

Hank's is where the history is.
When that room goes, public pool in Denver draws its final breath. I've been playing in that room for a half-century, I've seen roadsters from
Eddie Kelley to Weenie Beanie to Ronnie Allen and Buddy Hall in that room. and even Keith McC. made an appearance a couple years ago.

Please support Hank's, Denver guys. It's damn near all we got.

I know. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Minnesota fats fiberglass cue.
I play more with the Pechauer then the Lucasi. Any comments on that Ted?
Be careful,I know where you live :grin-square:

I think the only way to get a regularly scheduled tournament going to to advertise it for a couple months in the Cue times. Once it gets established you need only advertise special events. The problem I had with Billiards Inks Thursday night tournament was the late finish. One night I finished 5th and was done at midnight and the next week I finished 4th and was there until 2 AM! Had I advanced much further it would have been 3 AM or later. This is fine for some people but for those of us with jobs this is not good.I quit playing on Thursdays for this reason and was going to start playing in the Sunday afternoon tournament after the holidays and they shut the place down! I couldn't get a good roll in a bakery.
I would play on a Friday night or Saturday/Sunday day tournament.

Well I've been to Hanks/Paradise (used to go there years ago, who didn't?) and they probably have the best tables in town in my eyes, Gold Crowns with 4.5 inch pockets. There are no Diamond Pro am 9fters in Denver that I know of. The Rack Em old Diamonds have big pockets but have a deep shelf which trap the balls alot which in my eyes make it frustrating and difficult. You cant beat the $1 an hour table time at Rack Em during the week all day and night. Ted, Dusty, Atm, Kiki of course and a few more relics were at Hanks. I just cant figure out a good way to get there at rush hour. Funny how billiard halls in Denver change names but not the signage. No money for new signs, I guess Billiards Ink signs would have been a waste of money to put up anyway.

Does rack em still have that Gem of a Diamond Pro Am that no one takes care of? They wont brush the cloth, vaccum it or clean the balls. Not to mention its raggedy cloth and the fact that they rent it out to bangers who beat it to death. Man that could be an amazing table with a little tlc, it would make it worth the 45min drive for me.

That place doesnt need new people to go there for it to be full of unemployed hooligans, its already full of them, Hanks" home of the air barrel" Billiards is a sketchy little place, sorry. Yeah, I know theres a ton of history there and I can respect that, but don't pretend its at the same type of hall as table steaks or the cue club was. The reason that hanks is able to stay afloat when the others tanked isn't because its a great hall or anything. The fact is that the piece of property its on and the building are damn near worthless. Its a bunker. The other places tried to step up in class and were having to pay much higher rent and had more employees; just more overhead, yet they had the same, non paying customers.

Maybe you need to take your own advice. ;)

The signs at Hanks make me hoot. Over the front door it says Paradise Billiards (it's previous name) and over the back door it says Family Fun Center, the original name. Hank's had it for more than a year now and still hasn't put up a sign. Hope that's not a sign of no dough.

The only reliable action I've found at Hanks the last few years has been the morning golf game among a bunch of oldtimers. Not an especially friendly crowd, in my view.

I've rented a table several times and played alone, with no one offering any action. Maybe the situation is different at night.

The Pro am is gone from Rack Em. Yes the two shut down rooms were by far the nicest real pool halls but is that why their closed? You decide. I spent way more than my share of money at TStakes. I hope they reopen. Remember if I walk in a pool room I dont order till I know I'm gonna get someone to play. So those so called cheap players not ordering have a purpose. I can eat, drink and play at home alone for 1/10th the money. Why stay there. I can find the good in any pool hall thats still open, just dont hit me with that killer loud rap garbage and I could care less what others are wearing or what direction their hats are turned. This aint church. No uniforms or work boots, please! Hey Ted, Merry Christmas to u and that beautiful girl in your avitar.

hey, dougie. I was talking about having beautiful equipment to play on and in my opinion hanks doesnt have that. They're not terrible tables, but its not a room full of diamonds. Next time read the context that the quote is pertaining to. Thought they taught that at ivy league schools.

I don't want to guess who you are.

With our 24/7 Table Steaks closed, who's open on Christmas?
I may have to stay home with Kathy & her daughter....:boring2:
If Hanks doesn't open soon i'll be stuck going to see Little Fockers...:(

I know, Greenfields...:idea2:

Hey Ted,

Why don't you sell all your cues and open up a pool room, or two?
