Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Sounds intersting Mikey -- At which location are you thinking of holding this? I'm usually game once or twice.

Exactly Mike, a 9ft would be nice and get that money up. Where I lived before we had some of the strongest players in the country at some of our local tournament. The tourneys were not handicapped in a lot of cases. They ALWAYS were full, like an hour to a half hour in advance. Why? Because of that B&R pot. Especially when it got good and high oh man, you get together with like 3 other guys and all throw in like $50/person and let your best shooter buy the tix. Good times, I know you're thinking about the fact a lot of people here can run out, I know for the money per ball though it's a little harder. It's like being on the hill in a big set or tourney, that's the hardest run out.

Where I was at, the player could stop anytime they wanted. They just had to make a ball on the break and then the first shot after the break had to be made, and then they could stop if they chose or continue...BUT if they missed they didn't get anything.

I actually like that idea if it is on a nine foot table. That would make the pressure even greater. You could also take half the pot and make that only available if they break and run the whole rack, making the player feel more entitled to risk it all to run it. Instead of $200 a ball it might just be $100 so the pot is less likely to be drained as quickly. Of course if they break and run they get the full pot.

I think the max a player could win was 75% of the pot. That way there was always a decent amount of money to be won the next week if someone did break and run.

Thursday tourney might be a Saturday tourney that would start around 2 PM...either way I think it all may come to fruition. It's being kicked around right now.

I am gonna bring a little NC to Iowa though if I get to run this tourney. We're doing the break and run pot WAY differently. First of all, it's gonna be by the ball. So say the pot has $1800 in it, that's $200/ball. So you sink one on break and make 2 others you win $600. That's how that part will work. The other part is gonna be raffle tickets sold seperately for $1 a ticket. This used to work really well for tourney attendance and gives that added incentive to come play. In NC I busted 3 pots for over $4k and one pot for $9k. I don't expect them to get that high here but people used to corporation buy and get a $100 worth of tickets and when you have 30 ppl in a tourney and a couple people break dry a couple weeks in a row it sure does build that pot sky high.

Anyway that's my gameplan. I'm also thinking about doing something for the lesser players to make them want to play...maybe $12 for the best of the best, $10 for the good players, and $8 for everyone else. I don't wanna handicap the races because that gets too hard to manage. Anyway that's the latest in the kitchen right now.
Mike, I think this is a great idea!! I hope you get it goin soon. Hmm, I wonder where you are gonna do this tourney??

I'd like to see you do more ring games as well. Just an idea.

No big tables yet at big shots billiards, but maybe a couple of smaller ones will get swapped out. Still a wide variety of stuff there...

Yes Big Shots is a nice place, I def like it.

Calcutta's in the regular tourneys just don't work well in town. I'm liking the alternative solution that I am accustomed to.

I'm used to if you show up a half hour before the tourney starts you enter in a break contest and winner takes all. Of course there's a regular tourney. Then there is a break and run pot that gets paid by the ball. That's what I'm used to and I think that's a more viable format. People like having lots of chances to win. I like having money flowing around. Just saying.

The ring game is dead for now still. Unless someone wants to volunteer to run it and organize it, field phone calls, deal with the pool room, and everything else I used to do for it, then it's over. That sleeping dog can lie far as I am concerned.

As I veer off the gambling trail I'm looking for the next big thing. I feel like with the right effort and backing we could have a tourney like the Carom Room does. That would be cool. I'll never try to start that up though. What I will do...well I won't tell you all just know I'm trying to get something started. I got some help this time though so I'm a hair more optimistic.

Big Tourney?

We need to have a big singles tourney around here! I was planning one, but obviously that's not gonna happen:) We need someone to add some decent money to a monthly tourney. Should do one every month, and then have a big final tourney for the top 16 qualifiers. At the same time have a consolation tourney for the people that didn't qualify. Maybe do the big tourney before Vegas or something. Maybe do a different game every month. The final tourney can be like a top dog of Des Moines tourney. Take a portion of the monthly tourney and throw that into a pot for the final, just to make it a little sweeter. The monthly tourney fees should include a green fee and be around $30. The final should have more money in it, so make the entry maybe $75. The final would be a 100% payback, with last place getting at least their money back. I know there has to be a location willing to do this or something like this. Maybe Big Shots, Stix, or Big Dog's I guess.

I think Mike Frost would be able to pull something like this together. He has a lot of good ideas to promote pool. This town needs something for the die hard players! This is just an idea, so if someone has a better idea, they should post it. I hope something like this will get going!

This thread is sooo boring right now...someone entertain me please.

My goal tonight is to make a ball...then maybe two...three if I am feeling it...and so forth.

Missed ya at bar #2...good times and people were playing for shots at the end of the night.

Spimp I couldnt stomach alcohol after my Friday and getting double dipped on Saturday. Yes shoot for making around 4 balls a rack and maybe we won't have to give up 40 points a week. Oh wait we're playing the girls tonite which means your male ego is going to take over.

Jason, I was going to play. I thought about it, then by the time I was actually gonna play didn't feel like searching for a gal partner. Sounds like it was competitive and people had a good time, well Phil didnt have a great time but everyone else had fun lol. I'll play next time around, I told worm she shoulda found a better partner(it was funny) I figured they would win. Second ain't bad, I figured y'all woulda chopped depending on who had you guys in the calcutta. Good job though.

I have a lot of work to do on the new stuff but I will do what I can. Good job Jason...you and Kelly usually play well in those tournaments.
