Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Not sure the technical aspects, but liquor laws. Stix is a bar and dogs can 'cordon' off the bar and claim 'non-bar' status. In a nutshell. Someone else probably knows better.

Sounds like some tournament fun. I haven't been to the Sunday tournament for more than a year now (just life getting in the way). Kinda feeling weird about that... I always enjoyed playing in it. I had heard it wasn't as big as it has been.

But I don't think the 10-ball is as big as it should be either, wonder why that is.

I wish I had President's Day off too! I'm very jealous right now. 2 times in one week at big dog's, when's the apocalypse supposed to be?

Is there some type of law that makes Stix have to close at 2AM versus Big Dogs being able to stay open a couple extra hours. Why didn't they finish the tournament on Saturday night? Someone probably answered this for me but as you all know, I was feeling pretty good by the time it closed.

I know right! I might come up again this Wedneday. No promises but i need 9' help. So we'll see...

By one o'clock we were still waiting for a few teams to catch up the the 5/6 spot. Didn't help that the forfits made some teams really advance and which led to them sitting around alot.

stopping it there and restarting it sunday was the best option.

So worm, my little boy David was just looking at this while i was reading and started pointing and saying

"Daddy, Daddy its a mario extra life, extra life, extra life."

Then he noticed i was typing this and told me i had to type his name in this post.........so i did !

Well the 10-Ball tourney, while being a fun and competitive tourney has a lot of things going against it.

First off, it's ran by an individual that no one knows exactly when they will show up. An example is the first round started about 8:00PM on Friday which is later than people are used to and people were waiting around. Do that once or twice to people and they arent so quick to show up.

Second problem is that it's on Friday. It's the end of a lot of peoples work week and for a normal man sometimes you want to relax for a second after a hard week at work. It's also the start of the weekend aka the night to go out. So people go out to dinner and night clubs/movies/gatherings etc. more so on Friday nights than other nights.

Third problem is people have no conditioning for it. What I mean by that is 10 ball is not a league game, it's not a game people practice a lot, it's more of a game for the above-average player.

Fourth, Jon Brown snapped the Break and Run off. When the break and run is low usually attendance follows that correlation.

Fifth, I'm not sure how many people even know there is a 10 ball tournament. It's certainly not advertised or as supported as any other tournament.

In conclusion, I think over time, more people will adjust their time schedules and make it out for Friday nights. You have to start earlier and keep people playing though to keep the attendance pumped up.

Congrats Worm, you and Vic imho always make good partners.

What you said about the tournament also goes for Big Dogs i think. We tend to go there because we have to. I highlighted one of the more original thoughts on this whole thread.

Watch out people, someone else whos not afraid to tell it like it is starting to voice her opinion :)

Thanks Jason! If hes isn't totally wasted he's alright :) plus he makes me laugh and having a good time with a fun partner is half of the win.

I couldn't agree more with you on that it goes for big dogs in general. It is routine to go there. Sad thing with the sunday tourney.... My dad and his friend started that tourney at SuperToad. it was at this tourney i learned form Paul Baker how to play 9 ball.. was playing with frost - just met Jen Athen for the first time and she was prego with Claudia.

After Supertoad closed, the tourney was carried on by some players to Stars, Loco joes, Beachgirls (which is where i started playing again) Stix and then finally landed at big dogs. The saddest thing is that the people who play in it now, are the people who played in it then. Wouldn't you think that if you did the same thing for 14 years and practiced every day of your life during the week to retest yourself at the same weekly tourney, and you still can't win it consistantly, you probably arn't the biggest fish in our pond.

Anyway.... Thanks again jason. you are neato!

Worm;

I played in the Sunday tournament. Do I not have enough spark? :sorry:
I'll have to work on that.

Justin I told you on several occasions I'd really like to hear you scream or beat on your chest like king kong after a win. More flair please. You can't score a touchdown and not do a touchdown dance. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.

If this post was NBA Jam, the commentator dude would say..."She's heating up!"

Please refrain from using the word neato, I didn't like it when I was 7 and I don't like it now that I'm 27. At least use a cool word like rad, gnarly, or awesome. Also you should do the fist pump and say Yesssss, and that would make you more cool.

Like Totally!

Worm, enjoyed playin ya Sunday night, your were fairly competitve. Some people go to tourneys because it's fun for them, some go because there's nothing else to do on a Sunday, some go because they love pool, some go because they love 9 footers, some go to try to win money, some go because they live nearby, some go because they like action, some go to score some weed, some go because it's the only pool hall in town, and yes a few go to socialize. There are many reasons we all go. To expect social butterfies roaming a pool hall do jumping jacks after a win is well, not really gonna happen.

I like the "fairly" :) It's always fun playing you.

I think that going for all the reasons you listed should be on everyone list on why they want to go. For me -- it is nice to see the people i've seen growing up. I just dont think i need to spend $15 to do it.

You, however, do not apply to my previous post. You have taken the time off, play for sport and money (perhaps the other thing you posted but thats none of my business). I have seen you outside of that tourney, supporting other forms of pool - and you are always social :)

Can I get a "Hello .... GINA!"

(snip).

That is the number one reason I quit going to many tournaments.

It seems the starting time gets later and later. Usually because some player is late, has called and asked to be put in, and thus everyone has to wait for the tardy (usually good) player.

Think of the fun of showing up on time, paying, waiting for the best player to show. You gotta play him! wtf? He shouldn't even be in the tourney!

Then you play your match, lose...and wait.........

.......wait some more............

..........still waiting..............

.......thinking about work tomorrow..........

..............while you wait some more...........

..then youdon't care anymore............

............then your match comes up!!!!!!!!! Yippee getta play some pool...........it's "only" 11:00 !!!

...then you lose for lack of interest.............

What a great fun-filled night............NOT.

That's my take on these tournaments after all these years.

fwiw,

Jeff Livingston
