Update on the Des Moines pool scene

I figured you would like that one :) I know what it means, but I couldn't resist! I really think Stix should have a tourney on Saturdays. It could be like the monday tourney in Ankeny, and I would play. Not everyone plays APA, so I don't think an APA tourney does anything to improve our tourney seen. There needs to be something different though too. A new tourney, with different people running it would be nice! One pocket would be fun, but could it be a tourney that would grow? A 10-ball big table tourney would be fun too. Tough to get everyone to come every week though.

I like both ideas. The big table tourneys would be nice. I feel like we could do it. The more I read about the latest tournament trends around the country I feel like we are behind the curve with how we do buy-ins. I think for the work night tournaments it would be a good idea to say charge $11 to get in and maybe $6 or $7 to buy back in if you lose and want to continue on. That might solve some of the problems for the working crowd. If you lose your first you buy back in, if it's 11, maybe you just head home instead of buying back in. We could easily do a weekly 10 ball tourney like that. Saturday one pocket could be similar and do $15/$10 buy in or something like that.

I like the idea of not forcing players to be eliminated twice unless they want to keep going. I also like the idea of eliminating winners and losers brackets. This way you have one bracket going through to the end.

I don't want a handicapped 9-ball tournament. I don't want to win the tournament because I got spotted. I want to win because I worked on my game and was the best player in the building that day. I don't want Jody to go home and sleep peacefully at night, thinking he only got beat by the spot. I want him to have nightmares.

This concept works in our town for quite a few reasons that you can think of. If SVB was at our weekly tournament though you'd agree it needed to be handicapped, but in our case on the bar tables it's not necessary.

I agree 100%! I don't want spotted in a tournament even though I am a severe underdog. Its a pride thing for me. Now gambling is a different story. It has nothing to do with pride, and all about the money! Oh, and you already give me nightmares....

I like the idea that Mike Page has at Fargo Billiards. You pay a membership to the pool room, which in turn gets you perks. One perk is when you go to sign up for the weekly tourney it costs you less money than someone who isn't a member. If you play 52 weeks like Duane and Carol, you save quite a bit. I think the membership is cheap too. I think Big Dog's could take some lessons on how he does things!

Monthly tourneys are a good thing too. Do a $500 or $1000 added every month! They tend to get everyone playing if the entry is right. You could even do a split bracket with the masters in one and open in the other. At the end, the two winners play for an extra pot.

We are behind the times down here! Everyone has just fallen into the Mike and Jody rut, and that needs to change. You are right, there are a hundred different ways to do tourneys, and this town could use a few new ideas. They of course would like to see everything stay the same, because change would mess up their pattern!!

ok... so we are saying an open tourney. for 9 ball but i still doing a "guideline" is good for 8ball during the day.

as for playing your actual level and then screwing a team.... this just proves the excuse of sandbagging.

As I tell my team: I EXPECT you all to get better... and when we are all better and can no longer play together, then I expect them all to form new teams and create more openings for beginning players. Isn't that how most of us learned? Followed someone better than us and then branched off?

Now off to the 9ball.... what are the suggestions for that?

Pool hall opens at 2PM. This Saturday is bad for a lot of people between Olathe, Atlantic, and MN so here’s what we will do. On Saturday Feb. 27th we will have a race to 3 one pocket tournament. We’ll do it DCC style. In other words, DCC rules, buy-in, and redraws. I’ll run it if y’all want. I’ll even get a hold of Randy and see if I can work something out with the tables, see if we can get a food or drink special, see if they wanna throw in a little change. I work that out in the next 11 days and it’ll be a best effort.

Either that or we can play 10-Ball, but I’d like to get it done and started.

I think 8-Ball for your tourney is a good idea. I think you had it right.

I really like the consistency of the Sunday 9-ball tournament...that being said I'm sure there will be some rather enlightening remarks... But here's the deal~ the competition is really great, the money is accounted for, and generally speaking nearly all of the people there who are participating enjoy the event and take it seriously regardless of the negativity that trickles down.

Not to disregard your post, I just have no comment.

I do want to say thanks for being sweet to Stephanie though, she gets excited when she sees you.

Hi Jen. :)

Thanks for Sunday - always awesome to spend time with you.

How about recovering them ? 36 has a hole the size of grand canyon on the spot.

You don't like the way the ball goes airborne on critical spot shots?!? I have never seen a spot that worn down before. They have all new velocity pro for all the 9 footers at big dogs already. Just gotta do the table maintenance. I like the Simonis but it probably costs twice as much and I dont know if it's twice as good.

36 is terrible. No idea why they can't atleast take care of the four 9fters.

Frost, i think it would be awesome for you to set that 1pkt up. I will do all i can to be there and spread the word.

Worm, i already said you should just set up the 8ball APA style and see how it goes.

Aren't there a couple of Apa boards happening the next couple Saturdays at Stix in DM? I could have sworn I read that. What is the turnout like for those usually? You might use this to gauge the interest in an apa tourney. Personally though I might be more inclined to play a non boards tourney if the the entry fee isn't $35.

I would think the tournament would be in the more like $5 to $10 range.

I like when it goes airborne, kinda cool if it's your money ball. But my favorite, because it happens five times as much, is when you hit a shot soft and you get to watch it skid. It's cool cuz you don't know which way it's gonna go.

like a box of chocolates.

Every day Dean, Flip, and others complain about those tables, but imagine their surprise when the come in the next day or the next and nothing has changed!! Randy doesn't care because that means he has to spend some money, and God forbid they do that!! So we will go on day to day playing on the same crappy cloth that was on those tables 6 months ago!

There does need to be some change of pace around here in the tourney seen despite how Mike, her, or Jody feel about it. Change can be a good thing!

Yeah it's funny because usually in 1 pkt, that spot shot is somewhat of a 2 way most of the time. It's not cool when you don't have the option to roll it in and duck, everything is full speed off that spot.

Yesterday the rumor was, tables are being redone! When you guys get back the end two tables will most likely be blue with velocity pro. That's what Dean told me yesterday, they were asking which tables should be redone to him apparently. Good things.
