Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Hey Jeff, the time you didn't play your first match till 10:30 or so, was JJ the TD? God luv JJ

I forget, I think it was Jason Kampos (sp) but I wouldn't bet on it.

Why?

I was thinking about Wormness' post and harkened back to the old Frog's Sunday night 9-ball tournaments. They were to start at 7:00 and did...until Married with Children came on the air. then it was bumped to 7:30...until The Simpsons came on the air. :cool:Then it was bumped to 8:00 and then even later as people knew it was delayed. That killed that tourney, if memory serves me correct. You used played in that one, didn't you? McGee and I and Jerome were there quite often.

One Pocket Tournament Information for Saturday, February 27th @3PM

We’re running this thing just like the DCC One Pocket Tourney, I borrowed the rules from http://www.dcctickets.com/OnePocket/tabid/71/Default.aspx

Green Fees will be determined prior to the tournament pending ownership at Big Dogs. Also will announce any added money I am able to raise.

Tables: If you have no table preference you will be able to specify that at registration. Ideally we will play on all Diamonds. If we get more than 24, the volunteers to play on Gold Crowns will have that option if they are drawn together. No one will be forced to play on a GC.

Watching the hit: If you have someone pinned up in the stack or another questionable situation arise, please find someone to watch the hit. If no one watches the hit, the shooter is always right!

It’s a race to 3, please lag for break and not flip a coin. All rules will be enforced so please read them carefully, especially on intentional fouls and all balls in the kitchen.
Format:
 Race to 3
 Single Elimination ($15 buy in)
 Buy-In Option ($10 rebuy if you choose to exercise it)
 Standard One-Pocket Rules
 Alternate Breaks
One Pocket Rules

Format: Race to 3; single elimination; one buy-back option.

Lag for First Break: Winner of the lag decides who breaks first.

Breaking subsequent games: Players will alternate the break.

Legal Break: A legal break requires you to pocket a ball or drive at least one object ball or the cue ball to a cushion after contact. Failure to do so is a foul.

Cue Ball Fouls only. If you move more than a single ball it is a foul. Standard rule. Opponent has option to move ball back to original position or not.

Scratch or Foul: Any scratch or foul results in loss of a ball. If you have no balls to spot, you “owe” a ball. You must spot what you owe at the end of your next inning in which you have balls available to spot. If a scratch or foul is “slept” and subsequently remembered, the ball is spotted after each player has shot once.

Trapping or Wedging the Cue Ball: It is a foul if you deliberately trap or wedge the cue ball in the jaw of the pocket. In addition to the foul penalty, your opponent receives cue ball in hand behind the head string.

Deliberate Cue Ball Foul: If you wish to take a deliberate cue ball foul, you must use your cue tip to strike the cue ball. If you strike the cue ball with anything other than the cue tip, in addition to the foul penalty, your opponent receives cue ball in hand behind the head string.

Shooting into the Wrong Pocket: If a player shoots into the wrong pocket and continues to shoot because their opponent failed to notify them of the error, any additional balls pocketed in that inning do not count, whether pocketed for the shooter’s or the opponent. The first shot to the wrong pocket in a given inning is the shooter’s responsibility, and the opponent is entitled to any balls pocketed on that first stroke. However, any other pocketed balls in the wrong pocket in the same inning are to be spotted as illegally pocketed balls.

3-Foul Rule: If you commit 3 successive fouls in one game you lose the game. Your opponent must notify you that you are on 2 fouls immediately before your next inning.

Slow Play: Slow play will not be tolerated. Tournament officials will issue a warning if they feel you are delaying the progress of the match. A second warning will result in ball in hand anywhere on the table. A third warning is loss of game. A fourth occurrence is loss of match.

All Balls are Behind the Head String with Cue Ball in Hand: Should this occur, the ball closest to the head string is spotted. If 2 or more balls are the same distance from the head string, the shooter will designate which ball to spot.

wish Iraq wasn't so far away, I would fly home to play in this. GL with the tourney frosty. I'm sure more than a few will play and it will be a good time, and a good (although slower) change of pace.

Don't Forget!

Other Ways to win money on the 27th!

-An optional sidepot can be bought in to. ($20) – Players electing for the side pot are encouraged to sell half of themselves for $10 to someone else but are not required to. Cheaper than a Calcutta and a good way for people to stick around and have something to sweat.

- 10-Ball Break Contest: $5/try winner take all pot. Each person who elects to participate will get to rebuy for $5/try 2 times. So you get to break dry 3 times before you are eliminated. We will start this at 2:30PM so arrive early if you’d like to participate. Nice way to win a $100 or more in a short period of time.

- 10-Ball Break and Run Contest: I will also be selling raffle tickets for $1/ticket. I am pledging to buy $50 in tickets myself so there is already $50 in the pot. The winning ticket will be playing for the entire pot on a per ball basis. In other words if we get $400 worth of tickets sold, they are playing $40/ball. Make a ball on break you already are winning money. If the first person that is drawn breaks dry, we will be drawing another person. Balls are to be shot out “in rotation” In other words if you snap the 10-Ball, the 9-Ball is your last ball now. Any ball legally pocketed stays down and you get paid for it, clear the table to win all the money. Any remaining money will be held over for the next tournament. If that doesn’t work well for people we can just add it to the one pocket tourney payouts! We can vote on that.

So in Summary a person with $50 who comes to Big Dogs on Saturday the 27th can buy in twice to a one pocket tournament($25), get half of someone’s side pot($10), take a try in the 10-Ball break contest($5) and buy 10 raffle tickets and hope to get drawn for the break and run contest. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Also if anyone would like to help me please let me know. Thanks and hopefully we can alternate between a 10-Ball tourney and a One pocket tourney and every week have a big table tourney we can look forward to. All players are encouraged to come out and support it. Everyone who used to come to the ring games I ran knows the money is good, the atmosphere is fun yet competitive, and most importantly you’re among friends.

Don't worry I like to run tournaments where people can make some money. Or you have a lot of different winners. Easy on the wallet and the more people that win the more people will come. We'll see!

Frost i think you missed your calling in life. This looks to be set up perfect. Nice pricing on the entry also. Going to dogs today for a bit. See if i can talk the old men into playing. Imho they'd be crazy if they didn't.

Hi Jen. :)

Thanks for Sunday - always awesome to spend time with you.

Yes~ 13 years ago when I started playing I actually just had Claudia~ remember she had colic and I informed Mr. Athens that he would not be leaving me home alone any longer while he went to tournaments. The ultimatum was to buy me a cue and put a table in the basement, thus began my love for the game. A week later I came to my first tournament at Super Toad where I met you and you were cheering sooo freaking loud when I made my first ball the NINE....!!! I will never forget the look on Scott Frost's and Bill Wolf's faces~ PRICELESS. However, Mike knew I was bitten by the competition bug and ever since then we've always played at the weekly 9-ball tournament regardless of where it was or who was running it. I think Mike and Jody kinda got voted to take over when Joe Chladek decided to retire... wow that was a really long time ago too!! Remember his bag of hats?? Since then the tournament has been moved a few times and changes had been made but in my opinion Jody and Mike were always just trying to keep the tournament alive and going in an honest effort to promote the game. I'm not trying to stir up trouble or make myself vulnerable to inadequate grammatical references, just want to put a positive spin on an event that has been really great for a lot of local men and women for a long time running.

Did Harlan tournament die out or what?

Atta boy Mikey!! Hopefully it takes off, and becomes a great weekly event!

when on sunday do you plan on finishing ? With a rebuy option, you can't draw any further rounds until all matches are complete. This will greatly slow the tourney. I'll be in Wichita KS. all weekend. Have fun.
I don't envision much more than 16 people, if everyone uses their buybacks that's only going to be 5 full rounds before we get down to 2 tables. I don't think everyone will buy back in but I hope they do. I also don't think people will slow play it. It should finish that night. It's not a day time tourney to be over in 4 hours or less.

I also am leaving an option open for people to play on Gold Crowns. Just because you are in a match does not mean I can't keep doing the draw. I can ask while you are still playing if you are gonna buy back in and draw accordingly. Also I can draw if I know both people used their buy back already. There will be about 4 matches in the queue from the beginning so that's my buffer. Don't worry I've thought of all this and will have every table being played on.

Hopefully the people at Big Dogs will see that a tournament bringing in 12-20 people that normally wouldn't be there is a good thing for their business and not screw it up this time. Instead of green fee's how about all the people just pay the day rate ?

I as always will do what i can to help spread the word and let you run a good tournament like you did before. (plz dont get drunk tho) :)

I will not be drinking heavily as I do have a goal. Stephanie will also be assisting and she'll keep me straight.

One of the benefits of doing the redraw format is the winner/loser of a match doesn't matter all that much. I think the system provides less penalty for an early loss and makes people want to play longer.

I vote for more 9's. Good idea Ray. Bring back snooker too. :joyful:

Going to Atlantic this week, but might be able to get out two weeks in a row.

My daughter started sleeping thru the night recently. Ah, sweet respite and peaceful slumber!

She's just faking you out man. She wants you to think you are safe and sound, then the crying starts again for round 2.

No way. I think she's down for the count. Now maybe I can get back to the table once in a while. I think it's currently under a pile of toys and tents. LOL

I like the A+, A, B, C format that Ankeny Stix uses on Monday nights for 8 ball and the computer software Mark uses is pretty slick too. I would love to see that format at wdm Stix on Saturdays. I think it would eliminate ****ing about APA handicaps.

You know I would show to play in that being that I practically live at that place. The only reason I don't frequent the Monday tourney is because that is usually my day of rest from pool. :P

I would play that tourney also! I don't mind that format. Hope the one pocket takes off too!
