Update on the Des Moines pool scene

It would be nice if Big Dogs opened at noon on one pocket day. That way we could get started by 1 or 2 instead of 4 and it could be over before midnight. (we could easily get 24 people next time instead of 18)

I think the 10-Ball will be more fast paced. I might try some mini tourneys or something for next time.

Also thank Stephanie when you see her. I gave her about a 10 minute briefing on every part of the tourney, I know its not rocket science, but she did a very good job handling money, keeping track of rebuys, and staying on top of the draw. I think she really helped things go yesterday.

The 2 for 1 special on everything was definitely cost effective. Sweet tea and mountain dew adds up for some, of course my drinks add up.

Pool is fun! There will be a Jesse-Cap next tourney where he is spotting everyone 1-game. I say this because he cut through folks like butter and clearly plays on another planet than us. If Don M. and Jason Chance were playing I think he would have had to tighten up some.

Easiest, I never made a ball. By the time I get it down to a science, they will switch to 11 ball. lol
 
Any good stuff from last night ?

I had league til 5ish. Anyone who plays APA 8/9ball and doesn't play the double jeopardy on sundays.....you're nuts. Unless your team has multiple different players. It's easy to get qualified and you qualify for both 8/9 that = the nuts to me. However i am starting to believe that the APA skill level in general is down :/ I see so many 7's who can't even spell break and run, let alone do it. Thats what happens when the goal of the league is to raise players handicaps though. You create a fair league that can't beat anyone, lol.

I watched the rest of the USBTC. Earl plays good 8ball on a bar table. Watched the final 4 play, good stuff. Svb was in the crowd watching the finals, i thought that was cool. At one point he was pumping Earl up ! Scott Frost finished 3rd. He had a couple bad breaks and at that skill level in a race to 5, you're dead.

Funny quote's from the stream. They told SVB that he'd won the overall and it paid $2k, he said "thats all ?" Then he said, "what happens if i win all 3 events?" Mark who runs the tournament says, "You'll be barred" ... LOL.

SVB won something like 13k for the week. Not too bad :) To say hes not the best bar table player atm would be nuts. Would have loved to see how Jesse did down there though.

The double jeopardy league is cool and definitely the way to go, only problem is you have to find guys that are willing to play on Sundays. I agree about the handicaps but I think it's at every single skill level, they either need to make 8's in 8-ball or take whatever criteria they are using now and drop everyone a level and redefine the SL7.

At Big Dogs, I ended up in 5th/6th. I backed Theo and he actually won me some money. I then ended up 1 game loser to Steve Grant for $20/game one pocket. I think Theo went in with him but I could have won a $100 and I was bored so I figured I'd play. When I left Justin was down 7 games to Jody, no clue how they ended up they were playing one pocket even I believe.

Josh Johnson showed up and won the tournament but his backer ended up in some action with Pet so Josh didnt gamble at all. Think Pet and the dude broke even.

I don't know what it would take to beat SVB on a bar table but I know it would take a lot. I'd rather see Jesse and Scott play than Jesse and SVB. Jesse and Scott playing would probably be a closer match but than again who knows. I'd bet SVB couldnt beat Scott by 46 games again also. SVB is pretty ridiculous on the bar table though, Jesse is too good but SVB still has to be the best.

LOL, that whole thing was funny. Justin was on Josh's ass before the tourney about this magic $20 and after as Josh was getting paid he was right there to collect. There's probably a good story behind that $20

My standard disclaimer is he should be the only male 2 in APA if he played. He is a 13 or 14 out of 15 in the handicapped big table tourneys in NC. I do think you are cheating yourself in the APA if you don't try to sandbag. Like I always say, you can get screwed now or later, I'd rather get screwed when I'm in the desert!

Not too open up a can of worms, but Jody went out of his way to tell me he has not been pattern racking and he's just throwing them in random. When me and him played at the end of the tournament he did rack randomly. Big shocker, he still won!
 
I thought the first one pocket tourney went really well. Mike, your break contest was fun as well. Nice job Ronny!! I would play the one pocket tourney every chance I could just to get better at the game. I was very impressed with how Justin played...we had a very fun match! Jesse is a monster! He made it look like he was the cat playin with the mice! I'm sure the 10-ball will go just as good. Anyway, great job Mikey!

On a side note, congrats to Earl Strickland for winning the 8-ball at the USBTC!!! He played great.

Hmm...So 10-Ball race to 7 on the big table, random draw each round sounds like a good idea for the 13th. Especially with state coming up, here's the real question.

Does anyone want to play call pocket/call safe rules? Those are some tough rules but they are also the most fair. Let me know.

Yeah, we will have to hear how he shot the field full a holes too!! He is a character of the game for sure!! Can't wait to see the next Joe Rogan bit:)

At least call pocket, When 10-ball first came out remember it was suppose to be call pocket?
 
I like call pocket/call safety because if you go for a shot and miss the incoming player has the option to either shoot or make you shoot again, takes those lucky leaves out of play.
 
I'll be at Van Meter today, I have my Magic Rack Pros for 9 and 10-ball, if anyone wants to hit some and experiment meet me at the pool hall around 5. I won't be on AZ all day, we will be using these for the next break contest.

How about a ring game. Rotation, you get paid on the 5,10,15 and the last ball. You will only need 3 maybe 4 tables and you can re-draw the order every hour. I played in one of these once and it was pretty fun.
