Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Does anyone know who's on the handicapping committee for the tournament? I wasn't asked to be on it and I have texted people to find out my answer and no one returns my text. Simple question with a simple answer.
Funny, I asked and couldn't get an answer either! I would love to know if it's going to be more than just two guys on that committee!! I went out to smoke last night and got bombarded with questions about how they are going to determine handicap...all I could tell them was I had no idea who was on the committee, but I knew who I was going to ask. I want to know what guidelines they are gonna go by...ISPA, Valley, APA, or TAP even?

It's gonna be a fun weekend :)

And another thing, I can't believe they won't let you run the calcutta!! If Oly was in town, I'd say he should do it, but not sure if he's coming. I'm curious how much you would be able to get in the pot versus the other guy!! You should just pay his entry, cause I'm sure that's what he is getting, and then you should take over!!!

"Known Ability" of course. It basically boils down to trying to create the allure of handicapping while giving the lesser players not enough weight to be contenders. I did manage to get a slight explanation from Paul Ashmore but he qualified the statement with an "I think" which means he doesn't even know for sure.

Here's what Paul thinks handicapping will be based off of. For out of town players they will rank them according to who knows them and has seen them play or heard about their abilities. That's basically open to anyone to bring the discussion up for out of towners. For the in town crew you will be given a handicap and then can make your case with whomever to see if its right. Paul seems to think the committee is everyone there..that's prob not a good idea. You can never get everyones handicap right but I hope I don't see too many people rated higher than they are because they would be "tough" matches for others at the right rating.

I'm really curious as to who qualifys for this AA ranking and who would be considered a "Pro" level player. IMO someone even like Jesse Bowman is not a "Pro" although he plays real real good. Somebody like SVB is a "Pro" rank. I think it's all going to be based on who shows up, like making Mike Banks Jr. a "Pro" level player would be a total joke. So if you bump those guys to AA players than who's going to want to play even up with them in a tourney so are the top guys around here just A players? If so are the average players going to be going to 4 instead of 5 and so on.

You see where I am going. We have to guess the criteria because no one posts it or talks about it. Clearly established guidelines help everyone out. Just my two cents, I'd like some clarification.

I put it out there to do, no one was really receptive, I wouldn't run it for 10% of the calcutta money now. If the players come and the right guys are in the building the roster should essentially sell itself. I firmly believe they should institute at least a $10 or $20 minimum buy for the calcutta though! The tourney only costs a whopping $35 which is uber cheapy for an "EVENT" so I think a $20 minimum is inline. Especially when you consider the vast majority of guys will be drinking tap water or teas and maybe a bad of chips here and there.

Plus as someone who buys people in these auctions I can't tell you how bad it makes you cringe when you just bought someone for $400 and 12 guys later people are buying themselves for $3. It makes you just want to air the auction people cause the money doesn't get high enough to make it worth the person you took the risk on. Calcuttas go south real fast if you don't keep them pumped.

A free entry fee is over rated anyway, I'd gladly let someone pay mine but I'd rather have free table time and stuff that I could milk for a while, thats the ticket.

The two guys that are supposed to be running this tourney haven't done anything really. We had this conversation last night, so I won't get into it to far, but it's frustrating. Big Dog's should be all over those guys to promote it the right way!! But then again, I don't see anyone that works at Big Dog's doing anything to promote it either. I don't get it at all!! I hope what we have done will still get the guys from out of town to come. Mikey, is our entry paid as well?? lol!

All I know is what I've done to try to promote the tourney which is more than I should have done. I will say the tourney is posted on billiard community, pool4u.com, a crap load of private messages and text messages, thread on AZ Billiards, old fashioned phone calls, calls to several pool rooms, asking friends to spread the message, pumping it up on here, got the streaming done for the event for nothing by the same guys who get paid to do Olathe...blah blah blah. Doesn't really matter cause no one asked me to do any of it, my help wasn't wanted or needed and I am aware of this fact.

I just like to see good pool, all the bean counters know that with a $10 green fee that's the multiplier per player that shows up so take that number and subtract it from $1000 and that's your true added money. With a full field, money actually disappears into the Abyss but that's not for me to sweat. Moral of the story is I am happy we got a tournament coming into town that are of no expenses to me.

Glass is still very much half full for this tourney and I hope it gets the attention and support it deserves. For all I know what I've done makes up less than 1% of the effort that's going into this thing, from what I've been told though and from what I've seen with my own eyes the ball got dropped a little from State at Davenport to Midwest in Lincoln and not really being present at other regional events. Part of the reason other places can sustain a tourney is because they all show each other support and Des Moines as a whole is generally absent from a lot of events. I think the Midwest forgets we are here sometimes.

I would love to come and play but I'm scared. :) Or it could be that I'm on call this week and can't be two hours away. The price is right, and the added money is nice - hope there's a great turn-out so they do it more often.

I'll be watching the stream from home this time. :(

Just think of how this tourney would go without the support of a couple people like you!! It's kinda depressing to think that this town could support a big tourney like Olathe, but it won't happen because we don't have anyone willing to do what it takes to make it happen. We have people like us to promote it, but we need more than that. It's too bad Big Dog's isn't willing to put up decent money for a big team tourney, or bigger singles events. It'll probably have to come from an individual. Hopefully in two years ISPA will be moving to Des Moines, then maybe we will be able to get the ball rolling on bigger events. We all know that tournaments in the middle of the state would be successful, because of the surrounding pool communities in SD, MN, NE, MO, and IL.

Should be some interesting handicaps this weekend! Hopefully they can get them right. I really wish you were running the calcutta, because the guy who's gonna do it now has no personality. You would be able to get more money in the pot than him for sure!! Anyway, I hope this tourney is only the beginning of bigger and better events in Des Moines!!

In due time I think 90% of your post will become true. I think Big Dogs is doing some good things behind the scenes that if they follow through in the end, it'll be a bit of a shocker. Just all takes time though. I'm very happy with some of the later things I have learned are in motion.

I know what you are talkin about, but I'll believe it when I see it! Obviously I would love to see those things happen!

For those of you who don't know what Mikey nd JB are talking about i will fill you in. Big Dog's in November will host the country's first 5k added Gays only one pocket tournament.
