Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Some great TAR video's up - check them out.

How long is Dog's going to be closed??

The sign on the door says 6-8 weeks hopefully opening September 1st.

Can anyone else give their opinion on the tables at Smokey's. I've heard they're alright. I've heard the play good. I've heard they play crappy. I remember years ago even after hearing they had just been re-covered I went out there and they still played horribly.

I was just telling people how cool the people in iowa were and how I couldn't wait to see them again. Then I get a facebook message from mikey letting me know whats been said after I left. I'm disappointed in quite a few of yall to say the least so when I do come back if you were talking shit pretend I dont exist cause thats what ill be doing. I put people in plenty of action, played myself, and always got a line out for people that asked me when they were out of town. Not even counting the money I am owed from people. I might have stirred the pot and made people put up or shut up but I was always fair and pretty damn generous. I added money to a couple of my tourneys out of my own pocket and never said a word til now. I gave people a place to stay, money to keep the lights on and feed their children, brought people out of town for free, loaned out cues, etc but I was
Apparently a bad guy. Guess i'm better off in texas

This is my final post in this thread.

Hey man, I backed you in the Houseman thread...and elsewhere, too. Who was it that suggested the house PAY YOU FOR YOUR MARKETING WORK...ol' Chef Jeff, that's who.

Just cool off in a few months and come on up!...You're the next contestant on the Price is Right!

Don't paint with such a broad brush. You know who's who and what's what.

I will always look forward to running into you someplace down the road. Hope to see you return to Des Moines in the future.

Next time we meet, I'll buy Mikey some Goose if he posts again --- He buys me the next drink if we don't hear from him again in this thread.... BET?:ok:

Speaking of off the map for a while -- what's up with Big Dog closing for a month?? I guess I can't get out much in August anyway... but that's a long time to be close, IMO.

Guess the Poker room has AC too..:welcome:

Their closed for up to two months because thats how long they figure it will take to get the new place up and running.

New pool room in D.M.?

I heard a rumor that Whitey Walker is going to open a hall in Des Moines but then again I heard the same thing a couple of years ago. Anyone have any info on this?

Let's hope so.

I drove by the new place....It's a big mess outside. I don't know how they'll get it going by league time. I'd think they'd miss out on a bunch of business if it isn't. Didn't they have problems getting permits and such?

Maybe they can start leagues outside until it gets too cold?;)

I don't play in leagues. But I'm sure their trying to get the new Big Dogs open as fast as they can. As far as a new place opening I'd think it would be hard to compete with Big Dogs daily rates and Diamond tables. But I've been wrong before so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. What I don't understand is why players are so quick to put down the owners of Big Dogs. They seem to forget what it was like to try and find a place to play in Des Moines before they opened. Sure there are bars that have 3 or 4 tables and Stixs if you don't mind playing on valleys but there were no places that could host big events like SVB VS SCOTT FROST, ARCHER VS STRICKLAND, SVB VS JESSE BOWMAN. And a few other shows they have put on. I just think they deserve more credit then they get for what they have done for pool in Des Moines.

I can give you some reasons why, but I do not feel like bashing right now. Let's just say there are some things that went on or have gone on that some comments are probably deserved.

Yes some credit is definitely deserved for hosting some of these events. However there are two sides to every coin and the other side while uglier doesn't get brought up as often.

I'm still in the dark. But I understand if you don't want to go into it in a public forum. I'm sure that a lot goes on I never hear about. But if you follow the threads on AZ about all the halls across the country closing. And these guys stepping up and putting up a ton of money to keep a hall open in Des Moines I think it's great. And to be able to play all day for $10 I don't know any other place that will match that. Remember the old saying you don't know what you got till it's gone.

I have a request. Ryan Carter is getting married in December and I've been charged with a task to create or have created a pool related cake knife. Are there any cue makers in town that can make a shortened/smaller-scaled cue butt with inlays and a wrap and then attach a cake knife blade to it? Or even better would be a scaled down but full cue that you could unscrew the shaft and have a blade inside of it? Also, if you could give me an approximate price.

Either respond here or email me at jarrod.ellsworth@gmail.com.

Thanks

Jarrod

ok look I am down in this area I play ok but not great. there is one guy down here talks a lot, like he will play for whatever. the problem is everyone down here are friends so no one really plays each other. I really wish some good ass player would come down here and sneak up on these ppl. there is only one person who I would consider really good. and He is also the only really decent person down here as well. so not looking to set him up however he does play and again he is pretty good.
