Update on the "Schmidt List"

I don't think it's that. A very big % of pool player's on here know what gamble means. Johnnyt

My point is, even though the post was well-intentioned (and I doubt any damage would be done anyway), I don't think it's appropriate to discuss private arrangements, no matter how positive the outcome may have been.

Look, all I know is, I make arrangements at the poolroom all the time when gambling. Like, I have a system for how I handle table-time when I win. I don't tell ANYONE this system and my reason is simply, I don't want it held over my head if I choose to do something different. I simply want to be a nice guy but that frequently involves the other party being nice, as well.

I mean, maybe this is what John typically does and maybe it isn't. Regardless, it's John's reputation that's at stake and its positive/negative impact can only be assessed by John. That sorta business is private and if it were me, I'd be unhappy that it was posted in a forum.

I talked to John Schmidt this evening. He once again expressed his gratitude.

As most everybody knows, John had a good tournament. He did not win, but he did finish ninth cashing at $1,500. In a field this strong, no other way to look at this than as a strong showing. Congratulations John!

The deal with the backers was that for supplying $1,000 we get half the winnings. Well, to the nits that were critical about all this please read the next sentence carefully. John insists on sending us $1,000, not $750. I tried to talk him out of it, but he insisted. John wanted to make it clear that he is an honest and upstanding player. He did not want any of the backers to take a loss, no matter how small, on backing him.

So, again, John sends out a big “Thank You” to everybody that is supporting him. His very grateful for the support of the fans and will continue to try and represent the sport with professionalism and integrity.
John sweats class. There isn't much else you can say about that.

mthornto and John --- That's well above and beyond the call of duty, so to speak. I was only an alternate backer, so it's easy for me to say but I wouldn't want to accept $100 vs the correct $75.

Super of John to offer tho ..... I'm a real John Schmidt fan now!

agreed

I became a fan this weekend also. He conduct himself in a manner that is unlike most of the pros I have seen. Shows up to each match in dress shirt and jacket looking much like the players of years long past. He doesn't go nuts hen he loses and act like a child. He was as gracious in losing this weekend and he was humble in winning. I even asked him for an autograph which I rarely do with the players and he happily obliged. (only asked for three autographs all weekend and all three were VERY gracious: Schmidt, Corey Deual and my all time favorite Jose Parica)

Jude,

I see your point and would typically agree. However, in this particular case, John asked me to post the deal to the site. There are several reasons for him making this decision, all of them noble, which I will leave as private.

This was a great and successful experiment. I am now looking into ways to expand what we have started. As fans of the game, we have to quit waiting on the various pool associations and sponsors to come in and save the game. We have to face the fact that, for at least today in the US, pool is not a major sport. If we want it to continue and grow, we as fans have to step up and make it happen. What we did with this was a good start but not an exact model to follow. I want to continue this in a way the benefits the game but still protects the players privacy. I have a lot of thoughts on this, but I have not put them all together enough to post them just yet.

GEEEEZ the more i read/hear about John he is one hell of a guy...you companies out there that need a good person to sponsor here he is !!!!:)

John is a true gentlemen. I was a backer and met and talked with John at the tournament. I did not reveal to him that I was an AZ backer because I did not want him to feel pressured when he played. John autographed my case and was really easy to talk with.
In John's match against Rodney Morris. Rodney hit a jump shot over the 9 ball. Rodney thought he fouled by hitting the 9 ball with the cueball during the jumpshot. Rodney then touched and moved the 9 ball with his cue to indicate to John that he fouled. John did not agree with Rodney and thought he did not foul and hit the 9 ball during the jump shot. Even though Rodney definetly fouled by touching and moving the 9 ball after the jump shot with his jump cue. John let Rodney continue to shoot because he did not think he fouled. WHAT A CLASS ACT !!! Rodney went on to win the match.
John told me he was really tired because he was stuck in the Raddison until 6:00 am on Friday night Saturday morning due to the bad weather ( sleet/snow) storm. I guess he could not get a cab ride to his hotel. John played really well the only problem he was having was with his break shot.

I feel proud to have been a backer to John and hope he only sends me the $75 and not the full $100 I paid to back him.

well put CueJoey...

Well put...
Ive kept an eye on this thread from the beginning. The whole thought of players helping a player get into a tournament speaks mountains about both sides of the coin!! All involved (and then some) are stand up people for your acts of kindness. And to think people couldnt sign up fast enough!!

The other side of the coin is NO SPONSOR!! This is incredible that a guy of his ability, and a strong chance at WINNING isnt being sponsored. Now as you can tell from my Avatar, I work for one of the majors in our Industry but our vision is supporting the leagues and tournaments. If there was a change of focus, im dropping this whole post on the desk of the powers to be.
I hear very kind words spoken all the time... well, for a few yrs at least.

Lets keep supporting
