[UPDATES] U.S. Amateur Championships 2007

*** Sat. 12:00pm ***

Posted some new pics on the photo gallery (link in the first thread post).

Easy-e went two-and-out - says he kept scratching on the money ball. :(

*** Sat 12:30pm ***

Hoboken won his second match.
JoeyS is still playing.
Oneshotwiss just got called for his match.

*** Sat 2:10pm ***

Oneshotwiss won his third match, he's 2-1 now.
JoeyA and Hobokenapa drew each other on the one loss side, and are playing now, as is Cuechick (also on one loss side.)

*** Sat 3:15pm ***

JoeyA and Hobokenapa are still fighting it out - Joey's up 5-4 on a race to 7, looking good right now for the run out for his 6th game.

They started out playing 8-ball - H took the first three (with one b&r), J got the fourth, H the fifth.
Then switched over to 9-ball and so far, Joey's taken all five they've played. Just broke dry.
Hobokenapa gets down to the 9-ball and bobbles it, leaving Joey a duck for the game win and the match.

JoeyA and Samm are starting up. This is the last round tonight.

*** Sat 10:35pm ***

JoeyA is out - lost 7-4. :(
Samm lost her first match as well, to the women's champ two years ago. Continues tomorrow.

No more updates tonight! Also I won't be back at Mr. Cue's tomorrow until around 2pm local, as I have other responsibilities to handle 'til early afternoon.

Samm's out - Cuechick knocked her out.

Women's side, it's Michelle Monk and Betty Sessions (local) due to play for the hot seat.

Men's side, Robert Hall and J. Richko will be playing for the hot seat soon. Loser's side is down to two pairs - R. Jackson III and E. Little, andY. Neal and B. Belonradic. Last year's champ, Bill McCollum, went out three rounds back.

No more updates from me - all my friends are out, so I've hauled them over to Archer's room. Use the links in the first post in the thread to follow the rest of the rounds.

It was nice meeting you Scott, and thanks for all the updates! See you next Summer. And in reference to Jude's comment earlier, you did have to qualify for this tournament. The APA held qualifiers all around the country and the top 128 players were invited to the Championships. Some flew from as far as Seattle on their own dime to compete.

Scott,
Thanks for your kind hospitality. It was nice meeting you and all of the other AZ players. Wish I would have had a chance to toss back a few with Eric. (GOOD LUCK ERIC--Keep your head down) on the table and over there. .....It seemed when I did have time to visit with Eric, he was absent and vice versa. Anyway, it was a nice tournament. Competition was good. The Brit plays TOP SPEED 8 BALL. :D

Scott, I wish I knew you were going to hall the two loss side players over to ARcher's Room. I would have stayed another day. I decided to pack up this morning and hit the airport, flying on standby taking my chances which worked out fine this time. :)

A guy named Carson knocked me out out the tournament on the last match of the night. He played exceptionally well, running out frequently. Big tall kid from Kentucky..... At 5-5, he caroms in the nine from far side rail to foot rail (he played it) :) Then att 6-5 his way, I played a very nice safety on the six (I think) and he jump cuts the object ball into a half a pocket and ran out for the win. Oh well, that's the way pool is. I didn't play poorly so I'm not too disappointed. The only thing I'm really disappointed with is my stupidity. In my first match, I had the guy 6-4 running out. I'm shooting the 6 in the side with easy shape on the seven and the tournament director comes on the speaker (LOUD) and I let up on my stroke speed and come up short on the seven, now having to stretch farther than I like to reach the cue. Me being too stupid to just grab a bridge and pot the easy 7 (with a bridge), I stretch and overcut the easy shot. The kid (Chan) makes the 7 and there is no 8 ball. The nine is close to the pocket and easy out. He gets a little spurt wins the next two games and knocks me in the loser's bracket on the first match.

If any of you think it is an easy tournament, I suggest you (Kumbaya).

I doubt if you will be coasting no matter what your skill level is. :D

The skill level is higher than I expected. Although there are some C players in the tournament, there are far more B and A players than I thought there would be.

Everyone I played was a gentleman except Chan who kept walking around, squirming and moving while I was shooting. I got tired out it after several sharkings and told him so, rather sternly. :o He apologized and acted like a gentleman from there on out. It is a good tournament, maybe shorter races than I would like to have had but good overall and would recommend it to anyone seeking high level competition at the Amateur level.

Next stop, Derby City Classic.
JoeyA

wtg JoeyA for showing heart and winning 7 in the losers bracket.

I also agree with you that the level of play is pretty high in this tournament for an amateur event. When I went last year, I saw quite a few good players like Henry Brodt out of Ilinois and Robert Hall. That year, Tim Orange out of Alabama and Jason Richko played an ahead session for 1k, and a friend of mine Gary Gentry aka Cheeze got third or fourth. Gary will take a ball from anyone in the world and play some bank pool and he was the guy who beat Joyner at the 2006 DCC 1P.

I'll echo JoeyA's thoughts. It was great to meet all the AZBilliards folks, and I had a really great time this weekend, and made some new friends from all over the country. I played well for most of my matches, and I would have taken going 2-2 before the event started. And I did a rather nice 8-ball break and run against JoeyA before he came back and kicked my butt! ;)

The qualification for this event was super tough. I know I played at A speed for the entire weekend just to make it through to Atlanta in the first place. I did see a few weaker players over the weekend, but on the whole everyone was at least B speed, and one guy I played was right up there at Open level.

In reference to a comment about the BCA events (correct me if I'm wrong here and it was referring to a different event). The problem I find there is they take place before the team events which means you'd have to be in Vegas for at least nine days which is way too long. They also take place on bar tables. The event this weekend you have to qualify for, its on 9ft tables, it's over a single weekend, and you are playing for the love of the game. It definitely gets my vote as a personal preference, but both are great events in their own right.

post-event action

I will be playing Richko on Wednesday at his home court in Palm Harbor, Florida. He gave me his card, and said he would play $500 sets at Strokers. If any one would like to sweat the action, c'mon down!
