US Open Action Reports

We were at the Players Meeting Saturday night and we got to see some nice little actions among these players.

Edwin Montal paired up against a young player from the Northeast for a thousand dollar set at the practice tables in the Convention Center that night. He was one set winner when we left for QMaster.

When we got to QMaster, Vann Vann was warming up and told me he was waiting for Corey Deuel to show up. Corey and Vann Vann agreed to a race to 11 Rotation even games for some cheap set. Corey ended up wining the race by a game.

Van Boening walked in and started looking around; Ronnie Alcano walked in right afterwards and drifted towards Shane. Greeted each other and Shane asked for a spot from Ronnie for some three hundred dollar set. Ronnie started laughing and replied; "You've got to be crazy! You don't need a spot, and I don't play three hundred dollar set, make it at least five hundred and I might play you!"

They bickered for a while and decided to play five hundred dollar race to 11 set of ten ball even games. The score went back and forth for a while but it was evident that Alcano was the better player although Shane beat him last year in the Finals. Final score was 11-8 for the first set.

They played another set but on this set both of them had a number of unforced errors. Both of them missed shots that they should not have but overall it was Ronnie's show but as luck would have it about great players, whoever Lady Luck smiles upon would get the cheese. Shane won the second set on a double hill set.

Ronnie asked Shane if he would like to play another set for a thousand but Shane wasn't too keen on the proposal so they just called it a night.

Tony Chohan and some dude were playing One hole next table but we left before they were finished. McCreesh and Larry Kressel were also playing One hole at another table but we didn't know what happened.

That's it for now, guys, these were the only notable actions to report on last Saturday night.

thanks

Thank you for a nice gambling post........always interested to hear about action....I think it's funny that SVB would ask for a spot.........

Warren Kiamco & Donnie Mills

Night before last, Warren and Donnie Mills decided to try each other playing 9 balls even rack your own. I believe it was for 4 large, not sure but it's around that number.

Anyways, rack your own proved to be Warren's downfall as Donnie was racking good and breaking soft; making balls on just about every rack and the balls were just laid out to be made. Yep, they played even and Mills won. Warren was so chagrined that he offered Mills the 8 loser rack and with a higher bet this time, I think he offered to play for 5 large giving Mills the 8, loser racks.

Mills declined the offer and said that he would play the same way. Well, looks like Donnie Mills really studied how to rack and make balls every break. Everybody know that Mills is also a good player plus the fact that he can put up a good rack gave him the advantage on that match.

There were some other lesser actions on the side but I heard talks that there might be a rematch of Corteza-van Boening match. Like I said, it's only a rumor, so don't anybody hold their breath.....

Also, watch out folks, if this rumor pans out, it will be for some serious money for Corteza's manager is in town and I heard that they will take all comers with whatever amount they would want to wager!

Well, hopefully this match will happen!!

I'm a little surprised

Is "rack your own" pretty common in gambling matches? Seems everyone knows that a rack can be set to the breaker's advantage if not done properly.....(for example, if there's a gap between the 9-ball and either of the balls behind it, it increases the chance you can pocket the 9 on the snap into the respective corner pocket...)

Rack your own...

It is the prevalent trend nowadays among these players. Each player racks their own; meaning if player A racks, player B just sits until it's his turn to shoot.

This is a double edged technique, meaning when you rack you are assured you are getting a good rack while at the same time when the other player racks you don't know if his rack is "rigged".

Don't worry about action Mel. I'll take the 7,8, and the breaks and you can get played all day.

Or...some 9-6 at One pocket. (Mel goes to 9, I go to 6)

:)

In matches like this the 9 on the break almost always spots.

I think it's just a greeting in pool talk that we need to translate.

what's said: "What are you spotting me?"
what it means: "Hey, how's it going?"

what's replied: "I can't spot you. You play WAY too good."
what it means: "Good, and you?"
