US Open discussion

There isn't a thread dedicated to discussing the Open so I thought I'd start one.

I just read on the main page that Keith had an unfortunate loss in the first round. That has to be tough for him. He shouldn't of even been playing the first round! I don't know what those guys were thinking when they created the brackets. It has to be tough to have your first match on the featured table. Well best wishes to Keith!

Does anyone know when Rude Dog is playing? Or has he already?

I'm inclined to agree with you that Keith, as last years' third place finisher, deserved a bye, but those who got byes based on their seeding also seemed to deserve them.

Still, Ryan McReesh, a solid player whom I've seen play on several occasions, is surely not among the fifty strongest players in the US Open field and Keith, if he showed up in good form, really rated to beat him. As for being on the feature table, I would have expected that it would have helped Keith, as he is popular with so many fans. I'll bet the crowd was pulling for him.

US Open

Purdman here, John, (Rude Dog), plays at 11 AM today. BAZARAS won his first match yesterday. I left around 5 PM Monday so I could get to work today. I will be going back Friday. I would like to tell ya, Rude Dog is a hell of a nice guy and a good player. The man deserves to be there. I would like to thank everybody who made this possible. He is going to do us proud. I was watching him hit em Monday and the man can play a mean game of nine ball.
Everybody was there yesterday. Saw Johnny Archer, wife and new baby. Buddy Hall, Siegal (lost his first match), Grady, Earl, Cory, you name em. I heard Earl tell Kieth that he (Earl) couldn't break an egg.
Things were kinda slow Monday. The action will pick up big time. Can't wait to get back Friday.
GO RUDE DOG!!!!!!!!!!!
Purdman

Out of the 199 players at this years US Open, only 26 have potential to win this event and 15 real threats to actually win. The seedings for this tournament was based on UPA and WPA rankings AND (i stress the "and") tournament director's discresion (what ever that means according to Insidepool's website). If you look at AZB's bracket pairings the top 8 players have no real threats to beat them on the road to the quarter finals this year. It was nice to see McCreesch step up on the TV table and win and put McCready on the long road home (McCready was one of my top 8 picks this year).

If a guy like McCreesch can place well or even win this event, this will definitly help open the gates to more bigger tournaments in the US or make the US open a bigger tournament like the 300+ players in each event at the DCC. Just like Chris Moneymaker made the World Series of Poker in Vegas bigger than it has ever been.

Has Rempe retired from playing pool. I have not seen his name at any tournaments this year. This would have been a good chance for him to win this event with the lower amount of entries and the top players having got good seatings in the pairing charts.

Just some thoughts on this US 9-ball Open.

McCreesh has a pretty solid record, and has beaten Keith a number of times over the last year. I can't see how anyone could favor one over the other, they're pretty evenly matched. That was a tough first round draw for either of them; it's a shame one of them had to go to the loser's side this early.

At first, I didn't think Keith should have received a seed, but after looking at the players who did get a seed, I've changed my mind. Spanish Mike? Dave Bollman? Jose Garcia? I know Lebron won the Open in '88, but does he deserve a seed because of that? Tommy Kennedy ('92 champ) isn't seeded , and neither is Jimmy Reid ('85 champ), so why is Mike? Does the house pro of Q-Masters automatically get a seed every year? Keith compares to these guys well, and when you tack on the fact that he placed 3rd last year, he should have been seeded.

Where's Nick Varner? Where's Jim Rempe? I know Nick has had some health problems - has he retired? Haven't heard much from King James lately, either. I wish more international players would show up, like Yang, Chao, etc. Where's Engert? Did I miss him in the brackets? He is ON FIRE lately.

Grady pissed and moaned about not being seeded so they gave him one. When was his last big time victory? I like the guy but don't understand the biased seeding.
Purdman

It was good to see Bazarus win his first match. I believe his name is Voytek Partica. Hopefully John (Rude Dog) will win his match also. Looking forward to tonight's match between John Schmidt and Larry Nevel.

Grady's good for pissing and moaning, but he's not seeded. Pagulayan is the seed in his 1/32 of the bracket.

if mike lebron got a seed, then tommy kennedy definitely deserved one for being both a crowd pleaser, past champion and hell of a nice guy. TK can probably give lebron the 7 playing 9-ball and the 5 out and the break in personality. i am assuming that the soft draws for the top players is to ensure that the fans will have great matches to watch as the field narrows. if that is the case, i think that if you polled the spectators, maybe .000000001% of them would say that they don't like TK. He drives that crowd absolutely nuts and they love him to death. having said that, TK definitely deserved the seeding and the 'softer' draw.

somebody mentioned jose garcia. if he wins his first match and ends up having to play Brian Yi, take my word for it, he doesn't have to like it. neither does anyone else in the field for that matter. out of stroke, Yi is the caliber of a strong regional player like a McCreesh, but if he's in stroke, foggettaboutit.

i have also been wondering why jim rempe isn't playing any pool. haven't really heard about him since Karen Corr beat him in the finals of a Joss event. maybe it was too demoralizing for him to be beat by a woman?

it's possible that there is an anti-pool cloud floating over Scranton PA, because not only have we not heard from Jim Rempe, but there's no sign of Pat McNally anywhere either.

i too was shocked about keith losing to ryan, not because ryan can't beat keith, but because it was his first time under the lights. i too made that a big PLUS in Keith's corner. since they play alot together in regional tournaments, i am assuming that mccreesh feels very comfortable playing keith, and if it had been another top notch veteran, the outcome may not have been the same.

i think it's worth mentioning that Keith now has 2 consecutive us open tournaments where his match was the FIRST featured match in both years. i remember looking at the chart last year praying that Pat would do the McCready/Hall match. i always like watching the oldschool roadwarriors battle it out.

in keith's defense, last year in that opening match against hall, they were both kinda cold. after a few cupcakes on the losers side, we might see the keither pick up some momentum and make his presence at the open felt.(no pun intended.)

Best wishes to Nick Varner if he was too ill to make it to the open.

I wonder if they may have not seeded Keith just so they would have a great opening featured match. Keith is definitely a fan favorite, may have worked against him this time.

I got word on another thread that John Morton lost to Tony Robles. It's unfortunate for John to lose but fortunate to lose to a great guy like Robles. I couldn't think of a better guy I'd want to lose too.

I agree with JustPlay about wanting to see a new guy come onto the scene that not many have heard of before and then just destroy the field at the Open. Maybe I will stay low profile for a few years and then make my presence felt at the OPEN!!! :D

There is a big difference between pool and poker though. Poker is a game you can pickup pretty quickly if you can control your emotions, learn the cards, and get a little lucky you could win one of the main events. Pool is a very different story. It takes years and years of playing pool and hours and hours of practice to be able to compete against the pros.

I'm looking forward to seeing Keith and John battle there way out of the losers bracket. Best of luck Keith and John!

Hey Don or anyone else at the Open, if you see any action down there be sure to give us some updates!

I see you posted this hours ago w/o an answer so I guess I will help you out if someone didn't just e mail you. Yes az did sponsor him as they raised the money through members. He was voted in along with Jimmy M. I think. but he could not make it at the last minute due to work problems. Hope that helps solve your mystery.
