US Open on a Shoe String?

OK I've blown a small fortune over the last 8 months but would still like to go to the US Open and world summit if possible without breaking my budget. Anyone past players/travellers care to share their experiences? Cheap/Best hotels, how to get there from NYC? Do you need a car, if so how much? Entertainment local bars / clubs / girls etc etc.. :-)

I've got a free airmiles flight if I want, just need to work out the rest? The official hotel looks a little pricy and other than that I'm a bit in the dark.

For starters we have...

WSP: $300
US Open: $500 (+100 UPA Member fee)

Please feel free to share any reasons why I should break the bank too because if the US Open is that good then sod it I'll just go LOL!

Cheers

If you fly into NYC, you will have a 7-9 hour drive on average-6 1/2 would be about the best one could hope for.
But NYC is the last place you want to rent a car. If you fly to Norfolk, you will be less than 15 miles from the Venue and i believe if you stay at the Host Hotel there is a shuttle to the venue. If you need to rent a car, it will be way cheaper here than NYC and the flight from NYC is about an hour+.

The Red Roof Motel (Chesapeake) is about 200 yds from the venue and they had rooms at $51 nite as of 2 days ago. There is an Extended Stay place about 1/2 mile from the venue, mavbe less that has suites, kitchen etc for the same price. I m not sure of the name of it, hopefully someone else will post it. It is straight ahead out of the CC lot on the left 1/5 mi. short of Military Trail.

If you get close to the venue, you will not really NEED to rent a car but there is not much variety of food at the Center or within walking distance. There is a grocery store within 1/3 mile though.

There are no clubs to walk to and Im pretty sure there are no lap dance type places within miles at all in the area.
The after hours pool action is at Qmasters about 6 miles away from the venue and you could pretty easily catch a ride there.

I hope this info will give you a start anyway.

Great thanks, it seems the red roof is the budget place to stay. They are still going for 50 bucks on expedia and it seems a car might not be needed. If I do go I will prob fly into NYC so I can play in the World Summit to but it does seem getting down the the open might be harder than expected, flights are pricy on expedia. Anyone know any budget airlines that fly from NYC? Or alternatively I will check Amtrak/the dreaded greyhound (oh no he shrieks!) as like you said wouldn'y want to rent a car from NYC!!!

Oh anyone know anything about internet access, I assume the red roof won't have it? Any wireless access available anywhere near venue? (he says hopefully!)

Cheers

The Holiday Inn in the CC area had a computer available to the public in the lobby.

The Holiday Inn, which is right across the parking lot from the venue, has wireless access and they also have a computer in the lobby for use.

You can try to call: 757.366.0100. It is called the Best Value and I was told that they have Internet and is very close to the venue.
Good luck!

Greyhound has been running a special from NY to DC for about $25. From DC it would probably cost you another $40 or so to bus it down to the shore. Worth looking into though.

Red Roof is in the process of putting Wireless in all their rooms. Not sure if they got to Cheapeake yet but could be.

Try using Mobissimo.com for your air search. They include budget carriers in their search engine.

somebody freom NYC will be driving down there no doubt and with gas as pricey as it is they would probly give you a ride for you buying all or half the gas.

put the call out.

I'm not an airline buff, but I'm not sure flying into NYC is the only route. Norfolk has an international airport, and Dulles in the D.C. area is an international airport. Sometimes you can rent a small budget car for a week with unlimited miles for $129 which ain't bad.

Nostroke is right. Up the street from the Chesapeake Conference Center, the venue site, is a place where you can rent by the week with kitchenettes. Last year, I heard it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $275 weekly. That's a great deal if somebody here can provide the name of it. I just can't remember. It is within walking distance, though, about two long blocks.

Hope it helps a little. We need to get the name of that place up the street with the weekly rates. Does anybody know?

Wally is right-After NY, plenty of players will be going directly to the Open but i think most will head to the

Pre-US Open Warm-Up Event
Great Slates
Cambridge, MD
September 17 - 18, 2005
$4,000 added 9-Ball

This is a great pool room with tight playing Gabriels. There is even a Turf Club attached which is equally as beautiful as the room.

This event is on the way to the Open for Northeasterners and always gets a real strong field. It is 2 hours NNE of the Open on the Delaware Peninsula.

Good luck Craig

Cool loads of good info here, wireless at the red roof place would be cool.

JAM, I would be flying into to NYC only if I attend the world summit which is in NYC shortly before the Open, otherwise I would try and fly a little closer to the venue, airmiles seats permitting.

Greyhound can be done for as little as $70 return but after circleing the states once in 94-95 on a 4 day pass (don't ask! ;-) I would rather not go there again. Did meet many interesting convicts though just released and given their free bus ticket home!

Amtrak do it for about $200 return but only go to virginia beach and the last section is on the bus. Interestingly I could get a 30 day unlimited travel Amtrak pass for $270, or $210 for 15 days, hmmm Atlanta Open he he? ;-)

I think youre right though that many UPA players might be driving down for the warm up event but it does clash with the world summit, providing you are still standing for the last two days of course. I also am told that this event is almost full?

I will check some cheap flights and share what I find :-)

THanks again

Hi Craig,

I help run the Tiger Planet Pool Tour that is hosting the US Open Warm-up mentioned above. This is a beautiful pool room in Cambridge, MD. It is about 3 1/2 hours from the US Open on the way from New York City.

The room has 10 tables so we've limited the field to 64 places. There are just 16 places left. See here for more info:

http://www.planet-pool.com/

Last year Francisco Bustamante won over Ralf Souquet with Sambajon and Allen Hopkins in 3/4th.

For the US Open, the Red Roof Inn is very convenient (200 yards). You don't need a car to play the Open all week. Pretty easy to beg a ride to/from QMasters for the action.

Good luck!
Andy
