Use of Hand Talc...

I would like to know if any proprietors or room operators (as well as private table owners) have any direct experience with the use of hand talc having a detrimental effect on, or being directly linked to, the longevity (life), playability, or durability of the various fabrics being used on their tables (Simonis, Championship, Gorina, etc.)...????
I would very much appreciate your honest feed-back and/or experience.
Thank you.

We don't use the cone chalk but have one of those metal dispensers for baby powder. As far as wear on the cloth. Most every kind that comes in here has to slather their hands with powder. Why I don;t know but they do. We have 860 on all of our tables. I vacum our tables daily with a shop vac with a brush attachment and then I use quick clean when needed. I don't see any real wear effects from it it just looks ugly. I would rather deal with powder then the track marks you get from breaking on simonis. My cloth on our main table was installed sept 29 and it looks like crap already. Granted this table is the main action 9-ball table but that triangle on it look slike hell. Plays great but looks bad. I'm done ranting now;)

Hand Powder

I don`t allow any powder on my tables at all. People just make to much of a mess. They put it everywhere except on their fingers.

I do believe it is not good for the cloth, especially if its not vacummed up regularly. Also the balls seem skip during contact with the cue ball some times.

We only put hand chalk in the restroom, this way we can identify all the masterbaiters. :p

Seriously though, I do not allow chalk in my pool room. The main reason being, is that many people do not have the common sense to properly use it. They will have it all over the table, the rails, on the seating, on the floor, which makes a serious mess not only for me and my employee's, but most importantly for other customers.

I do offer gloves as alternative, for those who have sweaty hands, and along with this I have powder for them in the restroom!!!!  :D

We allow the chalk bags in our room. Thats it.

Baby Powder has perfume oils which over time leave residue on the table cloth. People that are too cheap to buy the real talc and substitute the Dollar Store baby powder are usually just charged extra for my time to clean up after them. Powder settles too much into the cloth slowing it down over time. If you have a smoking pool room it will speed up this problem even faster. :( The tar residue in smoke makes the cloth stickier which allows the talc to embed in the fibers making it harder to vaccuum all the excess out.
More maintenance and time wasted for me translates into more cost for the players. Fact of business.

Compare any Simonis cloth after 3 mos in a nonsmoking/ non talc room vs
a smoking/ baby powder free for all room and you will see a MAJOR difference in the quality of the cloth. The speed, the appearance, everything.

We have baby powder here and allow some use with it. Most of the time we just suggest that they invest in a glove and they usually listen.

Really haven't noticed any difference in wear, but it does look really bad though. Even when we vacuum the tables everyday.

If players could only learn that, if they rub a small amount talc into their hands, really well, they will get the desired effect and they won't leave the mess.
