Useful life of tip?

I have numerous cue and some have not been used in 4-5 years. What happens to tips if not used for a long period of time? Should tips be replaced periodically even if not used?
 
If you keep them in a dry place they are fine. I have cues I have had since the 80s with the same tip on them. The old single layered tips are fine.
 
Tips............. I have customers that change their tip every week or 2.......... I have others that have had the same tip for a year..............

And then there are those that are shoot really well but still search for the Magic tip that will make them shoot even better................... I have one guy that I have put at least 10 different tips on his cue last year..............

I try them all and I now am shooting with a triangle on my cue..... it shoots as good as any and is cheap and reliable............

all soft tips will mushroom......... some medium tips will .......not many hard tips will mushroom.......... I have one guy that can mushroom any and all tips I put on his cue..................

What's the advantage of using laminated vs solid tips?
 
I've got a McDermott D4 with an original 314 shaft that has an original Moori Medium tip on it. It still is a great tip even after about 15 to 20 years.
 
I dont think that question has a definitive answer, but if you play regulary, changing tips a few times a year atleast is a cheap way of having consistent performance.

The question is about age, not use.

For me, a tip dramatically changes for the worse after around 4-6 months (1 day of regular play per week).
Both of my tips (Everest, Sniper) started out great, but I sincerely hated each of them after around 6 months.

No amount of reshaping or removing leather would return the great feeling.
