I'm looking for a vacuum table for my table top lathe (Approximately 12"x48"). Any suggestions? If I can't pick one up reasonable priced, then I will look to build my own.:rolleyes:
 
Easy enough to make one yourself. I got a piece of pegboard from the local home improvement store and applied it to the top of a simple 1/2" plywood frame. Plumb in a vac port on the back and you're good to go.
I strap it to my ways when sanding/finishing. Saves alot on cleanup. I'll post a pic later.

I'm confused- are we talking a downdraft table for sanding, or a vacuum table to hold down parts?
I think Frank's on the right track. I look forward to seeing a pic.
 
Here's a quick pic. Normally I'll have it bungee'd to the lathe when I'm using it, but I just threw it up there for the pic.
Home Depot sells small pieces of pegboard. This one came out of a 2'x4' piece.

What does this need for a vacuum source? Is a shop vac sufficient or do you need to use a large Dust collector?

Any decent shop vac should work fine if you can stand the noise.
I have mine hooked up to a rather anemic portable/under-counter type dust collector. Suffice it to say it doesn't suck as much as I'd like, but for pulling superglue fumes or sanding dust it works pretty good.

If you're just sanding a forearm or a butt, you can also close off portions of the table with sheets of sandpaper...the suction will keep them in place and this allows for more vacuum where you're working. One drawback on my design though is it's made for a full butt or shaft, so anything smaller would pose a problem. Maybe the next one will be in modular pieces.

you could also build a box with noise proof insulation to house the shop vac in, run the exaust outdoors...that would be a cheap and easy fix for the noise. Probably cost about 50buks.
 
Thanx a Bunch you guys , genius , absolutely genius ... I was playing with ideas for a dust collection setup and what a simple yet effective solution ... Thanx again !!!:cool:
