Dig up a copy of R. Givens' "The 8 Ball Bible" on pgs. 41,42 & 43 he gives a very good
explanation and provides an experiment that you can do to explanation of the answer to
your question. The experiment is basically take 5 balls and mark their positions in the square
created by the 1st. diamonds on the long rails either side of the Side Pockets and the first
diamond in from the corners on the end rails. With BIH attempt to shoot them into the sides.
Then shoot the same into the corners. Which works the Best???
He also mentions that you CAN shoot a ball into a side pocket from below the center diamond
on a end rail on a Standard (9'), table you won't get it to go on a Valley unless it's above the
center diamond. He mentions basically 21* angle for the Std. table and 31* for a Valley. Shooting
at a regular speed instead of a Bunt speed. Reason is the sides of the pockets are angled like a
'V' starting at the mouth of the pocket narrowing as it deepens. So, "Side Pockets on big tables are
wider at the back of the pocket then the sides on a bar table." pg. 37, 8 Ball bible.
Measurements are Big table Mouth; 5-3/8" to 5-5/8", Throat for Big table; 4-1/2" to 4-7/8".
For a Valley Bar Box Mouth; 3-3/4" to 4-5/8", Throat VBB; 3-1/4" to 3-5/8". almosta quote.
Book was published in 2003. Diamonds may and most likely measure differently. Take a tape
measure with ya the next time you go a shoot some.
