Valley Forge EXPO Pro 8 Ball event

I was a little surprised when I noticed that the Pro event this year at the Valley Forge EXPO was going to be 8 ball instead of 9 ball. My immediate thought was that this was probably because of the IPT. On second thought I was wondering if maybe this might be a financial test. There are going to be a lot of 8 ball league players there. Is Allen trying to see if he can increase spectator seating sales by having the pros play the game that the audience is most familiar with. Even if Allen wasn't thinking this I'd be curious about the results. Is there going to be a marked increase in spectator receipts?

IMHO, CaptainJR, I think Allen Hopkins is always providing innovative and new concepts to the sports, i.e., Skins Billiards Championship, Texas Hold'em Championship.

I do remember reading that come this August 2006, there will be an 8-ball tournament at Valley Forge, PA, with a $25,000 first-place prize, to be played on the bar box, if memory serves me right.

Personally, I think the pro event this year is going to be very exciting. I am anxious to learn who will come out on top because the competitors will most definitely be giving it their all. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd be hard-pressed to come up with one player. Whoever does win, though, will have to bring their A game to the table. The 8-balls on the snap isn't as prevalent as 9-balls on the snap, and the competition will be comprised more of strategies and skills set as opposed to luck.

If you're planning to make the trek this year, CaptainJR, I think you're going to have a blast. Aside from the tournaments, one of the BEST features about the Super Billiards Expo is the vendors displaying their wares in full view for all to see. There will also be many cue repair folks on site, which is a great way to get your stick in tip-top shape. Also, this year, there will be no smoking on both the upper and lower levels, and I know that will please quite a few SBE-goers.

If things go as planned I'm going to come to Valley Forge on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing you and Keith again. As for the smoking, well, is there a bar? Or is this just like a convention center that only has big rooms and no bar? I guess I can go outside, getting use to that. Did you see how quickly I clammed up when Purdman put the question to me in one of the 'quit smoking' threads in the non-pool related forum? LOL

Captain, I would venture a guess that 8-ball is being played this year, because of the IPT influence. However, this is not the first time the pros have played 8-ball at Valley Forge. In 2002, the WPBA was on the main level, playing 9 ball, while there was a mens professional 8-ball tournament on the lower level. IIRC, Troy Frank won that event.

I was going back and forth between the two tournament rooms all weekend.
That was probably the best year ever, for watching pro pool at VF.

Partly, but they held a pro 8-ball event there a few years ago. So, it's not new. They were doing the 8-ball thing before the IPT came about. Troy Frank won.

That's what I had heard also but Jeeves was there on Mon setting up the suite for the party & he said there is going to be smoking downstairs.... LOL, who knows.....guess we'll find out when we get there.

I would venture that the IPT had at least a little bit of influence on this. The players may also prefer eight ball over nine, the decreased luck factor.

Did this tourney used to be called the King of Prussia? or was that something different? Btw Troy plays very good 8ball and I wish him the best this week and on the IPT.
