valley rails

Looking for someone or someway to find a good set of instructions or technique for proplerly doing the side pockets on valley rails. I have been doing table installs for 9 years but I rarely get to do bar style tables. I would like to be able to do the rails both using the fold technique, and the stretch around technique. Problem is, when I fold, I get to much felt behind and an ugly looking fold in front. How did you guys learn? Was it just lots of practice and trial and error? Also, what size staples do you use if any?

Thanks in advance

I'll put together some step by step pictures for you as soon as I get a chance. I have two different methods depending on how thick of cloth is being used. As far as doing a fold-less side pocket, I don't care for that method for a couple of reasons, one being that it causes the point of the cushion to really compress giving it more of a snooker pocket look, and two being that one single layer of cloth over the facing in the side pocket does little to protect the balls from beating through the cloth against the facing at the end of the rail. Take a look sometime at the side pocket tits on no fold valley rails and you'll notice that the cloth gives away right at the tit of the pocket and starts allowing the point of the cushion to show through.

Thanks Glen, I don't particuliarly like the no fold either but I have a couple of jobs coming up at a bar and the owner insists on having it stretched and not folded. My work on normal tables is jam up but I am like a beginner when it comes to bar style table rails...lol I would love to be able to aprentice with someone to learn some other techniques and andvance stuff but the area I live in is small and their is no one doing pro caliber work around here to learn from.

bar tables

I have found that using water on the side felts help for streching the material.

is there any how-to material out there for a rookie to learn how to lay felt...I just can't come up with the money to have someone do it and would like to give it a try myself!:D

Not trying to hijack your thread...any help would be great!

Just give it a shot on your own... If you need help step by step, start your own thread and we will try to help you out.

Wetting the cloth

I had a couple guys up here from Portland a couple years back and they used the wetting and stretching techinque on the side pockets

On a couple of the tables they pulled so hard that the tits had dimples , lol :p

It's funny now but, at the time I was not a happy camper. I think doing a fold is perfectly acceptable....at least for me ;)
