Value Schon R-12?

Hi,

I'm looking at a Schon R-12. Does anyone know what the value would be in 95% condition?

Thanks!

Steve

Last R 12 I saw for sale was $650.00 asking. It was very nice and straight (easily over 90% condition overall) and came with a pretty good vinyl case. This was about 6 months ago. Hope this helps.

Hi Steve,

There is quite a difference depending on the model/year. Here is what my experience has been.

1. If it has sharp points, sharp inlays, and stitch rings, one straight shaft, I would say at least $1000 to $1100. Add $150 for an extra shaft.

- If it has all of the above, but silver rings, knock off $100 to $200 (they made a lot more with silver rings than stitch rings)

- If it has rounded points, knock off 50% from either of the above. The rounded point models (there's one on E-Bay now) will go for $600 or so. I think these are players, not collectors.

- If it has sharp points and rounded inlays, knock off 25% (worth $700 - $800).

If you can find one, you want #1 above.

Here's my brief page on Schon with some pics.

I forgot to mention I have 2 R-12's, one with the gray/blue veneers exactly like the first catalog with stitch rings, and one with red veneers and silver rings.

Very good looking cues.

Chris,

I have one with silver rings and sharp inlays. My understanding is that silver rings were "upgrade" from stitches? I have say I prefer the look of stiches over the rings though.

Also emails sent to you regarding the other matter.

Here's the one on E-Bay that closed for $610 recently - rounded points but sharp inlays:

Here's one with sharp points and rounded inlays. Looks like the butt cap was taken off and shortened by a do-it-yourselfer, god bless 'em!

Thanks Chris! I was looking at the one on Ebay (Item 7193217098). It was stuck around $500. It finally went for $610. It was the blue grey veneered model with stitch rings. I couldn't get back to the auction, as I had a customer walk in at the witching hour, so it ended up being a moot point. I had a prototype for this model once upon a time that ended up being worth some nice money, so I thought this one was a little low...

The Paradise should be hitting the door soon, Chris. I think you're an hour behind us, but it's supposed to be there by three your time. Let me know when it shows! Hope ya like it...

Jazz,

I actually have old receipts from a Schon dealer where they charged $30 extra for the silver rings. I don't know if they were just padding the cost or if the factory actually charged extra.

However, the reason why I think the stitch ring cues are worth a little more is because the production was far fewer in Schon's early days . Once they started using silver rings, they made about 10 R-12's for every one they originally made in the old style. So it's just an issue of rarity.

The main thing is this when it comes to old Schons. #1, first and foremost, you want sharp points and sharp inlays. Rounded inlays don't look as good. Just look at the diference between your cue and the one that's on E-Bay right now.

Also, I tend to value any cue that is exactly like a first catalog photo as worth a little more than the cues made a few years later.

The one you missed on E-Bay had rounded points if you look closely - you might have lucked out missing it!

Yeah Chris, all I was looking at was the stitch rings and the sharp inlays...

I saw a guy on here with an 86 with sharp points and no inlays, 60 inch cue as well...to me that is the BOMB of Schon cues. Be a definite goal of mine to own a cue like that some day.
