Van Boening vs. Gorst 10-Ball Race to 120, Rematch June 2025 -- General Comments Thread

SVB had a bad weekend, it happens. Making a big deal about one bad match isn’t a career defining situation. I watched SVB beat Alex 40-20 in Cue Club 15-16 years ago. Alex had an off night-same thing here. They played again and again and again.

Do they play again? I’m not sure. I’m certain Fedor wants to play again after this session. However SVB has to process this and make his decision later on. It’s likely they play again, is my speculation. It’s great action and was a win for pool

Did SVB play with his own 💰 here? He’s often staked by Mr. Mars. If Mars did stake him here, I’d reason he’d be given pause to reflect on staking round 3.

I think they’ll definitely play again. Shane wasn’t in his usual form and losing this way could ignite his “hunger” again.

Filler plays pool with more imagination than any player since Efren and is probably the most interesting player to watch today.
I can't really say who has the most imagination - all the top players have it. And most tables after the break lend themselves to obvious patterns.

Who's the most interesting? Filler, Gorst and Chua are my top three if we are talking about how they play (Shaw is the most interesting to "watch.")

What makes Filler so interesting, to me, is I keep wondering if he will miss or how someone will beat him? Ditto with Gorst.

Filler, like Gorst, is great at not leaving himself in bad spots. He constantly gets great position, but if it's not ideal, he is willing to take a longer shot to minimize the risk. No one in the game is better at longer shots.

In short, Filler tries not to leave things to his ... imagination! (-:

The only top 20 player who sometimes really surprises me is Johann Chua. He will hit the ball much harder than other players to get better position. Or he will send the ball around the table to get even better position rather than accepting a longer, tough shot like Filler.

Chua is also the most daring -- and imo best - shotmaker in the game on very thin cuts.

Raga is another guy who sometimes surprises me - both good and bad. Pinoys in general seem to be interesting players.

Albin Ouschan, 99% of the time, plays as an astute pool observer might expect. And then he will pull off a wild and unexpected shot.

Kaci, before his injury, could be unorthodox at times. Lately Souto has caught my eye with his aggressive and imaginative play.

Filler finds more two-way shots than anyone else. He kicks with more imagination than anyone in the game today not named Pagulayan. Some of the downside management techniques he uses when he plays defense are something few that have ever played the game have employed. Josh also plays defense dynamically, addressing problems as he plays some of his safeties. He and Fedor are the two highest percentage players out there.

Filler's mind-blowing level of offensive execution has caused many, like you, to overlook just how high his playing IQ really is. Only Fedor and Pagulayan are comparable to Filler in shot design and general tactical conceptualization.

Fair point - his high level of execution masks his pool IQ. (Not that I ever doubted it!)

I started watching pool intently in late 2021. I remember thinking around late 2022 that Filler's safety game was merely above average. Below players like Alcaide and Ouschan at the time. And definitely something he needed to improve.

I could be wrong, but in my own mind, he became master at safeties over the next two years (2023-24). Now I think he is as good as anyone in the game at defensive play.

Maybe it's a coincidence, or part of Filler's design, but his most recent leap appears to stem in small part from regularly attending grueling events in the U.S. such as the Derby City Classic to hone his skills in games that don't get as much attention in Europe.
