Variation on 8 ball

Got together with friends tonight and played an interesting variation of 8 ball. I played this game for years with a relative who was an excellent player.

The player with solids must make the 1 ball in the right side pocket. The player with stripes must make the 15 ball in the left side pocket. If you make the ball in another pocket, you spot it and shoot again.

You must shoot the 8 ball in the upper corner on the same side as your 1/15 ball. If you make it in another pocket, you lose.

Lot of strategy in this game and has some of the feel of one pocket.

Anyone else played this game? Does it have a name? :cool:

Forgot to mention that you play standard BIH.

I play this all the time:

The player with solids has to put the 1 in the right side pocket. If the player with solids makes the 1 ball anywhere else, or causes the 1 to leave the table, he looses. If the player with stripes makes the 1 ball, or causes it to leave the table, the player with solids is relieved of the necessity of making it in the right side pocket.

The player with stripes has to put the 15 in the left side pocket. If the player with stripes makes the 15 ball anywhere else, or causes the 15 to leave the table, he looses. If the player with solids makes the 15 ball, or causes it to leave the table, the player with stripes is relieved of the necessity of making it in the right side pocket.

A player inning ends if he causes the other players key ball (1 or 15) to move (directly or indirectly) even if he pots the called ball in the called pocket.

Gentlemans addition: If you directly contact the opponents key ball it is loss of game. This prevents you from simply taking a foul by knocking the opponets key ball from right in front of the required side pocket.

The name of the game is called 1-15 here, although I have heard a rumor that it is also known as Panama.

That makes it even tougher. May have to try that out.

I found that in my version of the game, the most important strategy is to get your "key ball" pocketed as early as possible. :cool:
 
8 ball variation

At our senior center in Apple Valley Ca. the general rule of play when there are enough players is, partners alternate shot. 1 in the left side & 15 in the right side. Sometimes we play 8 ball in the pocket where you made your last ball. Oh yes, also call pocket. We have fun, but the game can drag on at times.
 
is the game from the middle east?

i ran into a bunch of guys from the middle east that played a game of 8 ball like this. looked like fun.
 
This is my first post so hello all! I was researching Marvin Henderson last night after talking with a friend of mine who used to hang out with him. In that research I ran across an interview of Cecil Tugwell who referenced the game you are talking about. He called it 1 and 15, 8 ball.

The game dates back to early 1900's, it is called One Fifteen. The way it was originally played the one ball and the fifteen ball were racked behind the eight ball in the rack. When you break whoever gets solids must make the one in either side pocket, and the other player must make the fifteen in the other side pocket. During the game if you have solids or stripes you can shoot the one or the fifteen into any other pocket and not loose your turn. The ball is spotted and you can continue to shoot, you can only win the game if your ball has been made in a side pocket other then your opponents and you legally make the eight ball afterword. All other rules apply except they did not have ball in anywhere back then except the kitchen.

It is certainly a fun game!!

Is the ball moved back to the spot where it was moved from ?

Not the way we play it, but we play under the gentlemans agreement, so any contact with the opponents key ball is indirect. I suspect you COULD add this to your local rules. But there is already a penalty for causing the ball to move, and if this gives BIH, you better be really good at moving his key ball indirectly before you do this intentionally.

We enjoy this game because it takes skill to manouver the key ball to the appropriate side pocket, and it also develops the skill to move the ball towards the side pocket when the CB is on the wrong side of the same side pocket (i.e. banks, kicks).
 
I heard of this about the time I started playing seriously. {early '70s} I play very, very little 8 ball, if at all.

Does this have a name? Yup.... the 1948 Rules.

The original BCA Ruleset came out in 1948 I believe after the BCA turned into the BCA (offshoot from BAA). The 1/15 8-balll was probably in the BAA ruleset before that.

Many older players and senior centers will still play this way, possibly because the players only knew that way to play. I've seen seniors play this way from Maine to California.

Now that you mention it, I think we added the rule that the 8 ball had to be made in the corner pocket above the side. He was a great player and it was the only way I could slow him down. He said he learned the game in the 40's. It was the only way we played 8 ball.

I learned a lot from him. :cool:
