Have some questions about minis at the APA in Vegas:

Do the mini-tournaments run all day, even during the singles?
How many players per mini?
Do they take long to fill?
Can you play in as many as you want?
What are the entry fees?
How do they pay?

Also, I've heard that a SL6 in one part of the country might not necessarily match up well with a SL6 from another part. I've also heard that they have judges in Vegas watching for sandbaggers and what-not, but that they don't minis? Is that true? Thoughts on the SL discrepancies?

I remember last time they had the cities qualifier here the operator had everyone sign a paper saying what skill level they thought they should be that included a disclaimer that if you play above your skill you cannot say its because you practiced. LOL!

Anyways, I would think that if you play in a area with a lot of players it would increase the overrall skill of players in the area. I guess the opposite could happen as well. I think the best way to gauge this is to play in a mini against a SL6 from another part of the country to evaluate your skills.

I have to admit I'm more interested in all of the other questions, so while I don't mind talking about this one, I hope it doesn't derail the thread.

Many thanks for your input, though.

Yes, the mini's run all day long.

How many players per mini?

Typically, there are 8 players per mini.

They normally fill up very fast.

They are normally $10. At the National Team Championship, they also have $20's and $50's.

They pay out 100%. Top two places.

Yes and late into the night usually!
How many players per mini?
Usually 8 but you will see some 16 and 32 boards also (or that may be just in August at the Team Championships)
Do they take long to fill?
You can buy in up to 24 hours in advance. Yes they fill very fast! Sometimes it is advisable to wait around when they call an event and see if someone wants to sell their spot but don't bet on getting in that way.
Can you play in as many as you want?
Yes.
What are the entry fees?
There may be some as cheap as $10 but I think most are $20 and I believe I saw some for $50 although that may have been doubles
How do they pay?
100% payback.

There are always stories of players who sandbag for the sole purpose of robbing the minis. They do have observers in the mini room but they don't typically watch a player closely unless they get a complaint. Most of the players I played out there were pretty accurately rated although you will run across the occasional 3 or 4 who pockets balls pretty good for their level (until you hook them and find out they couldn't kick their way out of a wet paper bag and have no mental toughness at all!)

On the one question: We had a local player here get raised because of the mini's. When he called his LO about why, she told him that the national office people had informed her that he was going up because over a several year period, they had tracked that he made several thousand dollars in mini's. Apparently, when you cash, your name or apa number is logged into a computer program for the mini's that tallies the results. So to answer your question, yes, they do keep track of results and can raise you as they see fit.

That persons name wouldn't be B***y S*****o would it? Used to be a SL5, and a dang good one.
If not, the same thing happened to this guy... Either way, they do track it, but only if someone files a complaint about the way that you shoot. At least that is what I was told.
