Veoh Problems

Wow, this is very frustrating. I just waited about 5 hours for my video to upload to Veoh. I finally hit the 100% mark and everything looked fine. When I clicked the button to publish to the veoh site, I now get a message that says "Video Upload Incomplete".

Any ideas? I am very upset right now. I googled the problem and it seems others have had it as well... I can't find a suggested solution.

This is awful.

Where is blackjack when we need him?

Sorry, Steve. Don't know the answer. 2 of mine didn't work and I don't know why. Most of them did.

How big is the file? What video format?

Try google video. There is also poolvids.com.

I know the waiting seems like forever, but you just have to start it and walk away.

Sigh. Tried google video last night. That seemed to be much smoother. When I went to bed, the video had uploaded and was "processing". Woke up - and it failed. No explanation at all.

These sites are ridiculous.

Dennis, the file size is 680mb and is in .wmv. This, of course, is an accepted file format in both google video and veoh. LOL.

I've had it happen on both and don't know why.

Maybe poolvids.com

Dennis, what's the deal with poolvids.com? Who keeps ownership of the file? I really know nothing about that site.

Thanks!

howdy - a quick guess is that the pool sites don't like the wmv format even though they claim to accept it. There are different versions of wmv and some of them might give the site fits when it tries to process (convert?) it. Having hassled with wmv conversion in the past I know it's one of the more troublesome formats to mess with.

One possible fix might be to convert to a format they like.
Another idea is that they don't like an irregular size. The video should be 320 x 240 or 640 x 480 resolution. Larger than that is unusual.

-----
Without getting too technical, there are 3 formats I'd recommend:
1. mp4 using divx video and mp3 audio (from the youtube faq on recommended video uploading... might not apply to other video sites, but I think your odds with this one are good)
2. AVI using same, or mpeg (pretty much guaranteed to work, as these formats are super common and easy to convert/manipulate... only downside is that the filesize may be larger so the upload might take even longer)
3. flv format - this is pretty much the native format of youtube and google videos, and also happens to be very good in terms of compression/quality, so I'd think it'd be a good solution too.

To convert fairly easily to any of these 3 options, the most straightforward program is called "super". You may never end up trying this but I'll do a mini-walkthrough anyway:

Drag and drop your wmv (or whatever) movie to the bottom. For the first dropdown choose mp4, avi, mpg (MPEG II), or swf/flv. What you choose in the first dropdown determines what's available in the next one... video codec. Here choose divx for the first two options, and the other 2 are self explanatory. For audio choose mp3 if it's available, AAC if not. You can also see where you can set the resolution and change the bitrate, which affects the final quality/filesize. 720's a fair bitrate. I wouldn't fool with any other settings except perhaps to check the "Directshow decode" box, which you want to do if you ever installed ffdshow on your computer.

ctrl+T to choose where you want to save converted files, and then click "encode active files" to get the conversion going. Once it's done try uploading your converted file and let us know if you had any luck.

Looking forward to watching!

PS: since super's official webpage is quite ghetto and makes it hard to find the actual (free) download, I uploaded the installer here:
http://creedo.gbgl-hq.com/SUPERsetupJan18.exe
It's about 27 megs.

CreeDo,

That was very nice of you to write all that, but unfortunately, it didn't work either. Said there was some sort of a software incompatibility, but obviously didn't specify. Why expect any error-handling routines from a sophisticated piece of software lol? Still, you're getting some rep for taking the time to help.

I'm at my wit's end. It really shouldn't be this difficult. I have a good game that I'd love to share with everyone but I just don't see how it can happen. And it works perfectly on Windows Media Player... can anyone explain to me how the supposed geniuses at Youtube and Google haven't figured out HOW TO DO THEIR JOBS??? From a conceptual standpoint, their number one job is to make sure that their sites do what they say they do. They are video-uploading services!! If they say they accept WMV then they should accept WMV!!!!

Sorry, this is unbelievably frustrating.

I took a 5 second clip from the file and tried to upload it. It worked! So now I'm trying to split the main file up into two parts and see if that works.

Steve, I PM'ed forum member "tonmo" who owns poolvids.com to see if he could come into the thread and help you get it up on his site.

We wanna see it!!

Kev - thanks for the PM.

Steve, I run PoolVids.com. 680MB is very large (for any of these sites), and that seems to be the problem here -- my current limit is 100MB, but as you can see there are people who are able to upload videos that exceed an hour in play time within that MB limit. I am tempted to invite you to mail me a DVD of the file so I can compress it for you. I could also direct you to the free Windows app, Windows Movie Maker. You can import your video, edit it (if you like), and save it in a more compressed format that doesn't compromise too much in terms of viewability.

Some background on PoolVids.com: I set it up to allow pool enthusiasts to post their videos. I enjoy watching people play pool. I strive to make sure no copyrighted materials are uploaded -- ie, it is meant to be a place where people who video themselves upload their game play -- not a place for video collectors to post classic AccuStats tournaments (for example). I'd happily host such content but would want permission from the copyright owners -- since there are lots of logistics with that, I just position this as a site for individual contributors.

I don't make any money with this site but I have other sites which pay for my hosting costs and so I'm happy to provide this service to the pool community. The business model is ad revenue (banner ads, text link ads) -- the content is free. You remain the copyright holder of your content after uploading it, of course. So far my server is having no capacity issues hosting these files.

Currently, I allow up to 100MB to be uploaded. That has been working well so I don't see a need to change that. I don't have any play-time limits like some other sites do. I believe, currently, .mov files are not supported, but all others are.

steve: how long does the video last. you should get 1minut of video in less then 1mb. with 780mb thats 13 hours of movie :p dont tell me it took THAT much to run a 96

If you want, i can put my MSN up once at home, send the file to me, and i should get it under 60mb for the whole thing and send it back to you or put it on a youtube/ google / veoh

Thanks everyone. I'm trying to cut the file size down via Windows Movie Maker, though to keep a reasonable image size and bitrate I had to keep it at 180mb. It's processing now; will check it when I get home late tonight.

Tonmo, it sounds like a wonderful thing you're doing with poolvids. If my plan above doesn't work, I'll mail a DVD to someone who can get the file size down appropriately so we can put it on your site.

A little more optimistic today thanks to everyone (though am still baffled by the google uploader's bug).

Sounds good -- just let me know if I can help at all... whatever the case, I'm looking forward to watching your run!

Following up on this item, note that PoolVids.com has been relaunched and now should support uploads of about 200MB. I say "should" because I haven't tested it, but I do know that I've configured it for that support.

Note that the old videos have been reposted, but they've lost their meta data (member, tags, description, etc.). I'll work to clean some of that up over time.

I also posted this in the Main forum but know there are a lot of Straight Pool videophiles in this forum so wanted to follow up.
