Veterans Day Flanders Field

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,

God bless Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McCrae, Canadian physician and poet. My grandfather was in the Second Battle of Ypres. where McCrea wrote his famous poem while in charge of a field hospital. Lt Col McCrea died near the end of WWI, in Boulogne, France while commanding a field hospital there. My grandfather returned to Canada, and one of our great possessions is a simple walking stick he brought back inscribed Ypres.

This poem is known to almost every Canadian. In school we always recited In Flanders Fields every Rememberance Day, I imagine it is the same today. For the last few weeks most people you see walking the streets in Canada are wearing a red poppy on their lapels, a sign of remembering those who sacrificed their lives in the worlds conflicts.
