 I played in the open for the first time . Checked out the registered players and cringed. Won first match hill-hill. Played next match lost 10-4.
Good player nice guy wished him success. He told me next match was against a road player who plays better then pro ? side players. He lost. Road guy won his bracket. The names are all over the az tournament boards. Next time I'll watch. When are you not a amateur?

Chris runs a pool hall in Fredericksburg VA. He has been playing there since he was a kid. Father owned the place. Damn good player.

There was alot of very g o o d Players!!! Chris won his bracket some of the others
Shawn Wilkins, Josh Brothers,Phil Sherman Trenton Marty won their brackets .Others knocked out were Roberto,Abraham,Kirshner, all can play well.

Honestly I have never understood the draw of that tournament? Hefty entry, single elimination and a fairly poor payout for the numbers (someone is making money?) and your expenses to travel to it are steep too...?
My friend finished 2nd in the woman's event a while back and I think she only got 350.00 or something? WTF?

He said chris loar or something.

Chris is no road agent- just a good guy who works lots and happens to play some jam-up pool.

He won the VA State championships in 2004 which got him into the US Open. There, he beat Jeremy Jones and ended up doing pretty well overall.

next time $ 200. A players only?

With a 200 entry fee in august I wonder if hopkins is trying to get the A players into the frey and eliminate the road kill like me.:D

The women's draw is only 2 brackets. The men's draw is a staggering 1100 player field with maybe 16 brackets. So, the payout for the men isn't bad if you get in the money.

Chris Loar is a great amateur player, and probably could do some damage if he went pro. He's just a hair below the likes of Jason Kirkwood, Brandon Ashcroft, and Shane Van Boening, IMO. The latter three all barbox monsters who have made that transitition from great bar box amateur to a higher level of pool lately.

The men's draw is funny, as Eric. had reported. I lost my only match, and I played about as strong as I could have. I had 4 or 5 break and runs, and I ranout 2 of his full-table racks. Yet, I lost in three close sets. My opponent virtually matched me stride for stride with 3 or 4 of his own break and runs and a couple early 9's. Tough draw for me, but still a good match. I had the pleasure of watching my surrounding tables collecting misses after misses after misses.

Simply, for the $75.00 entry you have yourself a four day pass to the expo and an opportunity to cash in the tournament if you are a halfway decent player.
Single elimination and alternate break means you better bring your best game right from the start.
Of course, you cannot compare the women's event which, I think is open to 64 players to the open amateur event which is open to 1024 players, although they only had 800 plus this year.

I don't see any reference to August on that site...?

Actually, the dates are August 3rd thru the 6th.
It's a $200.00 entry 8-Ball tourney open to the first 256 players, IIRC.
I believe it is a first place payout of $10,000.00

Hey Fred... gotta respectfully disagree with you on this one. I haven’t played this tournament in about 5 years, and it’s because of the payouts. In 2000 I came in 2nd, and after expenses, I profited about $1,300. In a 600 player tournament, that is shameful.

The following year, with more players, I came in 9th and lost money after I paid the hotel bill.

I love Allen and Dawn, and I think they provide a tremendously valuable service to the industry and the fans with this show. But there are basically only two reasons to go to Valley Forge – looking at equipment, and gambling. If you’re interested in either of those things, then you might as well play the tournament also. But if you’re NOT interested in those two things, and are simply looking to play in a tournament with fair payouts, Valley Forge isn’t it.

Even with a smaller field for the women, 75.00 x 64 is still 4800.00, for 2nd to pay less than 500.00 is crazy! And I was referring to Steve's wife Gina, so he knows better what she got but it was not much. I just remember seeing the results published abd being pretty shocked.

Lara,

The entry fee into all the tournaments is $50. The additional $25 gets you your Player's pass into the Expo.

And then some of the money into the events is taken out and added to the second chance events.

I played in the Amateurs Open, I won my first match and lost my second match. Did I think i had a chance to get in the money, No, will I do it again next year, of course. Overall it was a great experience.
