Hank,

Thank you so much for your kind and supportive words. I appreciate it.

BTW, my co-author on the VEPS project is Tom Ross, not Tom Rossman. Both Toms are great players, and both have done a lot for the game.

Dave

FYI, I now have the VEPS Disc III info posted along with six sample clips. Everything can be found here:

I'm very excited to announce the release of the first DVD in an instructional series I've been working on with Tom Ross this past year. The series is called: The Video Encyclopedia of Pool Shots. If you are interested in checking it out, I have a video trailer for the entire series near the bottom of the page here:

The first disc, which includes 1 hour and 27 minutes of video, covers basic shot making and position play. Video excerpts for a collection of shots from the DVD can be viewed online here:

Here's the outline of the entire series, and here's the complete list of shot categories included on Disc I. The series includes over 750 shot categories within 50 different major categories, with over 250 "gems" of the game. We think, and we hope you agree, that the series is the most comprehensive collection of useful pool shots ever published (and demonstrated).

I think Tom and I made a good team for this project because he is an experienced player, coach, and instructional columnist, and I have more skills on the understanding, illustration, and explanation side of things. I hope you guys like our stuff. We have worked really hard on this project ... months of planning, months of filming, and months of editing and production. It has truly been a labor of love.

Please check out all of the video clips online, and let us know what you think. Also, please help spread the word.

Regards,
Dave

What do you guys think about the new clips?

Dave, The clips from disk 3 look great. I am stll trying to absorb all of the information on disks 1 & 2.

Have you noticed that the audio balance on your video camera is a lot louder on the left side? I noticed it the other day when I was wearing headphones while watching the DVD on my computer. It's the same on both DVD's.

Good. That must mean there was a lot of stuff from the first two discs you want to absorb.

Sorry about that. The audio from the shots is actually on the right audio channel only! Unfortunately, the audio cable we used to go from the wireless mic to the video camera was the wrong type and we lost one of the channels. I didn't realize it until a Disc-I customer reported that he was getting no audio at all on his TV, which was mono with only the left audio channel attached from his DVD player. Unfortunately, by that time, Tom and I had already finished all of the filming for the entire series (which took months). We weren't exactly in the mood to re-film everything. What's funny (or sad) is that we tested everything thoroughly (or we thought so anyway) before we started, but we didn't notice the stereo balance issue.

That's probably more than you cared to hear (or read), but this was certainly a huge "lesson learned" for Tom and I.

Dave

Thank you.

But are you saying you don't like the little "jokes" spread throughout VEPS? :grin-square:

If you have a birthday coming up soon, try to drop some hints to a loved-one or friend. ;)

Me too! They have helped me understand a lot about many pool principles.

What format and purchase methods do you suggest? Also, do you want separate clips or the entire DVDs in compressed form?

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions,
Dave

I was curious how you expect to get the clips or full videos and how you want to play them. Do you want to play them on a computer, I-Pod, I-Phone, or something else? Isn't it easier just to buy the DVDs and stick them in your computer or DVD player? Your geek friends might also be able to show you how to copy the DVDs to your computer so you won't need to carry them around.

I also love jokes (i drive my friends bonkers) BUT IT IS YOUR WISDOM I FIND INVALUABLE.
Thanks again.

For people who don't like PayPal, I offer ordering by mail instead. I actually get quite a few mail orders ... I guess you're not the only one that doesn't like PayPal. For more info, see the bottom of the page here:

Just don't let you dog get the package. DVDs with teeth marks don't play so well. :grin-square:

Looks great Dave!
Thanks.

This is the one I want to get.
This is the disc I'm the most excited about also; although, I still have a big spot in my heart for Disc I, which I also like a lot. I certainly learned more during the filming of Disc IV than I did with any of the others.

Hopefully I can win the tourn. Sat. My son just came in and told me I have to shell out $140 to fix my car that he has been borrowing for a year and a half.:mad: I AM going to get the video as soon as I can though!
Good luck in the tournament!

Dave

Just D/Led 3 videos from YouTube. This looks bleeding awesome! Hardcore-porn for billiards geeks :)

Just Vols. 1-3 could keep a novice like me (APA 8-ball SL4) happy for several years at least.

What I particularly like about the content:

- 8-ball strategy
This is only covered in any depth in a few places anywhere else, yet is essential for the majority of pool players out there!
- Playing safeties
These quite often need very soft shots, which are hard to make. Again this is not much covered in detail elsewhere and yet is an essential element of the game if you want to progress.
- Getting out of safeties
Equally important! I suck at this so it's great news to me.
- Avoiding scratching
Love it! Never seen it covered in such detail anywhere else. A fundamental piece of knowledge for succeeding better at the game.
- Makeing and controlling long shots
Love it!

What I'd like to see:

- Specific shots (or even a separate section) dealing with the difficulties of shooting into the centre pockets - especially the difficult cut shots and very narrow angles. I find these among the most difficult of the "normal" shots.

- Option of alternative video angles for all shots: 1) Table view; 2) Cue-ball POV/shooter's view (so you can see line of aim, English/spin applied, power, follow CB initial path, initial contact etc.)

- Instruction on getting the maximum angle from near-straight shots.

- Make a Vol. 6 "Misc" - includes technique and technique-honing essentials such as recommended stance, bridge, grip, stroke, aiming straight.
Plus billiards physics theory - ball contact, angles, rail contact, throw, squirt, English, how table qualities affect play etc.
What to look for in a cue. Buying and maintaing a cue. Advice on cue tips.
Could also include advice on the mental game and playing competitive billiards.
Plus recommended (by pros/instructors) practice drills (including making balls, CB control etc.)
This would complement Vols 1-5 perfectly and complete the entire instructional package.

The audio quality is excellent. The video captions are also good and from what I've seen are well-placed. I like the inclusion of the cue-ball diagram showing where to hit.

My only (minor) grouse is the video quality. I D/Led the highest quality available from YouTube and ran them with the video window maximized (not full-screen); however, the videos still look kinda grainy/pixelated.
Are you using High-Definition? Are there any plans to improve the video quality in the future?

As others have said, this product looks like it could become a standard work/classic/bible in the billiards industry for years to come. Thanks for all your hard work and everything you're doing to help us enthusiasts, Dr. Dave!

Thanks! The porn analogy is quite flattering ... I think?

Agreed.

I'm glad you find this stuff helpful. Please help spread the word to your league buddies.

What I'd like to see:

- Specific shots (or even a separate section) dealing with the difficulties of shooting into the centre pockets - especially the difficult cut shots and very narrow angles. I find these among the most difficult of the "normal" shots.
Some of the topics on Disc I relate to this.

- Option of alternative video angles for all shots: 1) Table view; 2) Cue-ball POV/shooter's view (so you can see line of aim, English/spin applied, power, follow CB initial path, initial contact etc.)
That's a great idea for future projects, but unfortunately not available in VEPS.

- Instruction on getting the maximum angle from near-straight shots.
We cover this in detail on Disc II.

- Make a Vol. 6 "Misc" - includes technique and technique-honing essentials such as recommended stance, bridge, grip, stroke, aiming straight.
We actually originally planned to include this stuff on Disc I (and we actually filmed some stuff), but we decided to scrap it since there is already so much available on these topics already (e.g., in in my book). I also have lots of online resources addressing these topics in the FAQ and NV video sections of my website.

Plus billiards physics theory - ball contact, angles, rail contact, throw, squirt, English, how table qualities affect play etc.
All of this stuff is covered in detail on Discs II and IV.

What to look for in a cue. Buying and maintaing a cue. Advice on cue tips.
I also have some info on this stuff in the FAQ section of my website.

Could also include advice on the mental game and playing competitive billiards.
Plus recommended (by pros/instructors) practice drills (including making balls, CB control etc.)

Another good idea. Concerning drills, I have lots of good resources here:

Thanks.

The video quality is better on the DVDs. The videos on Youtube are uploaded as downsized and compressed WMV files, and your Youtube download might introduce additional losses.

Are you using High-Definition?
No. We used standard digital video.

Are there any plans to improve the video quality in the future?
Again the quality on the DVDs is better than what you are downloading from Youtube. The only way to improve the DVD video quality is to purchase all new equipment and software, and refilm the entire project. That ain't gonna happen.

As others have said, this product looks like it could become a standard work/classic/bible in the billiards industry for years to come. Thanks for all your hard work and everything you're doing to help us enthusiasts, Dr. Dave!
Thank you for the kind words and excellent suggestions and requests.
