Just D/Led 3 videos from YouTube. This looks bleeding awesome! Hardcore-porn for billiards geeks
Just Vols. 1-3 could keep a novice like me (APA 8-ball SL4) happy for several years at least.
What I particularly like about the content:
-
8-ball strategy
This is only covered in any depth in a few places anywhere else, yet is essential for the majority of pool players out there!
-
Playing safeties
These quite often need very soft shots, which are hard to make. Again this is not much covered in detail elsewhere and yet is an essential element of the game if you want to progress.
-
Getting out of safeties
Equally important! I suck at this so it's great news to me.
-
Avoiding scratching
Love it! Never seen it covered in such detail anywhere else. A fundamental piece of knowledge for succeeding better at the game.
-
Makeing and controlling long shots
Love it!
What I'd like to see:
- Specific shots (or even a separate section) dealing with the
difficulties of shooting into the centre pockets - especially the difficult cut shots and very narrow angles. I find these among the most difficult of the "normal" shots.
- Option of alternative video angles for all shots: 1) Table view; 2) Cue-ball POV/shooter's view (so you can see line of aim, English/spin applied, power, follow CB initial path, initial contact etc.)
- Instruction on getting the maximum angle from near-straight shots.
-
Make a Vol. 6 "Misc" - includes technique and technique-honing essentials such as recommended stance, bridge, grip, stroke, aiming straight.
Plus billiards physics theory - ball contact, angles, rail contact, throw, squirt, English, how table qualities affect play etc.
What to look for in a cue. Buying and maintaing a cue. Advice on cue tips.
Could also include advice on the mental game and playing competitive billiards.
Plus recommended (by pros/instructors)
practice drills (including making balls, CB control etc.)
This would complement Vols 1-5 perfectly and complete the entire instructional package.
The audio quality is excellent. The video captions are also good and from what I've seen are well-placed. I like the inclusion of the cue-ball diagram showing where to hit.
My only (minor) grouse is the video quality. I D/Led the highest quality available from YouTube and ran them with the video window maximized (not full-screen); however, the videos still look kinda grainy/pixelated.
Are you using High-Definition? Are there any plans to improve the video quality in the future?
As others have said, this product looks like it could become a standard work/classic/bible in the billiards industry for years to come. Thanks for all your hard work and everything you're doing to help us enthusiasts, Dr. Dave!
