Vietnamese Billiards.

Hey John:

Please recommend a good Vietnamese restaurant in Atlanta: I'm hard up for some tastey jellyfish, seriously.

If you like PHO (Vietnamese beef noodle soup), i would recommend DAI LOI restaurant. Dine in restaurant, I prefer COM GRILLE. Both these restaurants are on Buford Hwy.. I don't have a favorite Vietnamese restaurant here in Atlanta. Depending on what I want to eat, I'll go the restaurant that has the best specific dish that I want to eat.

I have played in alot of asian pool rooms where I have lived over the last 20 years(LA/NY/FLA/S.DIEGO and Boston)I have seen drive byes, knife fights and fist fights, but never had a single problem,I guess if your there to play pool and not looking for trouble or acting like a wise ass it will be ok

how to play

If your experience with asian carom joints are good in your area than great. I am speaking about the New Orleans/Houston asian carom world. Maybe what I should say is that not all asian places are ruff but be very aware that they may be. In a response to stolz I cautioned him based on the experiences that I have had. However, if the atlanta asian carom world is clean than that is great.

Regardless of the company you might find my original point was centered around how interesting the games they play are.

NOTE!!!! For all people who are frustrated at the lack of action at the local pool hall there is plenty of action in an asian establishment. To them poker is not a new fad, it is old hat. They love to bet high on carom games even if they lack the skill to back it up.

Does any know the rules to some of these games? If not I will ask around and try to find out.

This post is in response to several post. PHO is a great dish. My wife cooks a mean bowl of pho. In response to the question about the rules of the games, I do not think anything is written about rules (at least in english.)

If you are ever in New Orleans Pho Bong is good. If you are in Houston Pho 21and Pho Saigaon are good - both are in southeast houston.

Another note about Vietnamese billiards is this: Vietnam adopted billiards from the French much in the same way that the phillipines adopted pool from the U.S.

Again a word of caution if you go to these places go with someone who speaks the language.

My wife is from Marerro. I will be going there the second week in march to see how the place looks.

When you go check out the corner pocket in kenner. It is on williams, which is close to the airport. The corner pocket is run by the best player in louisiana - Jamie Farral.

There is a good chance my wife knows your girlfriend. I have alot of vietnamese family and friends that are from there.

Sorry for the out-dated info on Bien Thuy. I'm surprised it isn't still there- it had good food, got good reviews in the press, and was usually fairly busy when I went there. I guess 20 other Vietnamese restaurants within 5 miles probably didn't help...
