I have a Viking cue repair question. A player on the league asked me to look at his 1-1/2 yr old cue as he thought there was a crack in the shaft that made noise when shooting. I looked at it tonite, and there looked to be 2 cracks from the ferrule on down, about 5/8" long. One on either side of the shaft. I removed the threaded ferrule, and confirmed that there is indeed a crack that runs thru the shaft. He bought it from a well know local dealer, who looked at it 6 months ago and said nothing was wrong, it was just a surface crack. Viking has a lifelong warrantee, Problem is, he doesn't have the receipt. My question is, anyone know how nice Viking is to deal with(will they exchange without receipt) ? or will it end up just having to bite the bullet and build a new shaft?
As a side note, the ferrule is a fullcapped one, that had approx 3/16" gap between the bottom of the threaded hole and the top of the tenon, not even filled with glue, just empty:confused:

I thought that Viking was still using the small metal screw, that comes out of the bottom of the ferrule & threads directly into the squared off end of the shaft?...JER

That's exactly what I expected to find when I took off the ferrule.
I've thought of cutting off the tenon, boring it out to around.450, load it up with slow set epoxy and a .447 plug, then trim it down to .285 and thread it. It may be worth a try, instead of a new shaft.

They haven't been doing that for ten years or so.

Just tap the tenon again and use a 2-part epoxy resin and fix the problem... I don't understand what all the commotion is about but this is a simple fix for your problem.....

This repair approach is one option but I think you'd still be obliged to tell the client that after a new ferrule is installed, he'll still have two oppossing cracks running from the tenon to the surface of the shaft.

By my ethics, you're obliged to inform him of this but in doing so you're placing yet another 'tic' in his mind to be concerned with about his equipment. Do you think his psyche can stand it? Do the right thing, sell him a new shaft. He'll thank you for it.

The cheapest way out is to shorten the shaft by the length of the cracks.
IOW, turn the tenon further down the shaft and lop off the excess once the new ferrule is installed, assuming you're going 'thru-ferrule'. You'll get some of it back by going capped.

Otherwise, that tenon WILL break and it's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of when.
 
First, I want to thank all that have responded, including the pm that I received. My original post was to find out if Viking will honor their warrentee without a receipt, which I found since then, that they won't. It wasn't that I didn't know how to repair it, I just didn't want to jeopardize any chance of a warrentee replacement/repair. Once I touch this to far, then all warrentees are null and void. I apologize if I wasn't clear on that. The repair option is cut the tenon, then bore and plug, then re-tenon, then thread, and finish the job. The other option is a new shaft. I have explained to the customer the pros and cons of repair, and the cost of a new shaft, and also told him, that if the repair failed, within a fair amount of time, I will build a new shaft, and deduct the cost of repair. He is going to look one more time for the receipt, then call me with his decision. He is aware that the cracks will still be there, but they will only be surface ones at that point, and less likely to cause a problem. One factor to consider also is the cue has a red stain on the forearm, but the wrap and rings are more like a dark pink pearlized color, and he has had alot of razzing for using a 'chick stick' so he doesn't want alot of cash invested in a 1.5 yr old cue that is less than 'manly' looking, even though he loves the way it plays.
Michael, after reading your post, I took a carefull look with maginfying lenses, and it appears to be all one piece. The grainwork, lines up on the tenon, to the shaft. It does look like a seperate dowel at first glance, after you mentioned it, I had to look twice at it. They must have used live tooling to thread it to get it to look like that.

Update, The customer has decided to have it repaired, but I have one question. What ferrule material comes the closest to the original Viking? Their's is a proprietary material, and I'm not sure which type to use to make it out of, BTW, it'll be capped, threaded. Thanks

I lean toward "cerrusite" but don't quote me... afterall you think I'm a piece of sh*t !

But aside from your personal feelings.. I'm trying to be of genuine assistance in a business manner especially becasue it's a legitimate question !

Was that really necessary? This is a public forum anyone can post and anyone can read what you post. Also He doesn't have to take solely your advice many other people post here. A forum is about help. If the person takes it great. If not at least you tried.
