Vintage Accu-Stats Tapes

Today I had a bit off an off day from work so I decided to clean out my garage. I found a long lost box of Accu-Stats matches that I hadn't seen in probably 15-16 years.

I found some that are no longer available like Earl Strickland beating Nick Varner 11-0 at the Sands Regency, a two tape match of Shannon Daulton beating Steve Mizerak 5-4 at the Legends of One Pocket III, an extemely rare match with Mike Massey beating legendary Iowa player Don McCoy 11-10 and a player review tape where Jeff Carter wipes the table with Efren Reyes 11-3.

But the real gems that I found were a couple involving Texas players.

I have a tape from 1988 (I think) of TJ Davis playing Earl Strickland. If I recall correctly someone told me this was from the Akron Open. Earl wins the match 11-8, but TJ does win a game on the 3 foul rule (extremely rare at the pro level).

And the granddaddy I found was a complete presentation of the finals of the 1995 Texas State Open where Bob Vanover double dips Gilbert Martinez 11-8, 11-3. Vanover starts to really hit them at the end of this match.

I used to love to watch these things and learn from these different players and finding these things in the garage was a definite trip down memory lane.

Actually I'm debating the "for sale" part.

I recently got back into playing after a nine year layoff and I have thinking of selling off all my old memorabilia and tapes to try and get a nice custom cue.

In addition to the match tapes I have a copy of Willie Mosconi's little red book autographed by Mosconi, Wimpy, Jersey Red, and Cowboy Jimmy. I got it autographed at a Legends tournament in San Antonio around 1986 I think.

I also have a copy of the first Blue Book of Pool Cues that I have seen recently selling very high on Ebay and an autographed copy of Jack White's book Come Let Us to Billiards Away.

I know I have a ton of other stuff like copies of the Texas Billiard News and On the Snap magazines and original photos of all the legendary players in Texas - Dick Lane, CJ, Bob Vanover, Jersey Red, Billy Weir, UJ, etc.

If I decide to sell I will let everyone know.

I have that Earl Vs. Nick 11-0 Great match!

Even Weenie Beenie said, "When Earl is in dead stroke, no one in world has ever played 9 ball as good...no one".

What year, what tourney was that match?
Thanks, RJ

> It was from the same Sands tournament that Earl beat Roger 9-5,9-5 in the 2 out of 3 set finals. Earl runs out after Nick misses and puts 6 full racks behind it. Nick wasn't too far removed from his hottest streak ever either. Tommy D.

Yeah..i have heard the same thing about Earl the Pearl....i just ordered his current US Open Match where he hands Efren his tail in an 11-3 azz whupin...I also ordered the classic match up of Efren vs Johhny Archer...Phil Cappell does and instructional Video of this match..

This reminds me of something the other day. About a month ago I borrowed like 30 accustates tapes from my friend, and I watched them all at least three times each. I got bored of them since I knew what was gonna happen every time. I was cleaning out my closet and I found one of the tapes I borrowed that I hadn't watched yet. I remembered the day I borrowed the tapes I was going to watch that one first, and I put it aside on my closet shelf, but ended up forgetting about it until I found it a couple of days ago. It was Johnny Archer vs Efren Reyes, at the US Open the year after Johnny won the title. It was one of the most exciting matches I have ever seen. Johnny is just playing incredible pool, and gets on the hill at 10-5, and he makes a positional error, and then Efren takes control of the match, and gets it to hill-hill. The crowd was going crazy, and I was even excited watching it, because I felt like I was there when it happened. In the last rack, Efren breaks and the 9-ball is heading right for the side pocket, and the crowd starts screaming, but a ball comes down and kisses it out of the way, and the break is dry, with Archer having an open shot on the 1-ball. He makes a great positional shot for the 2, and he is visibly nervous and shaking. He gets badly out of line on the 7 ball, but makes a great recovery shot, and he winds up with a testy shot on the 8ball, which he makes, and gets almost to the 50-yard line with a cut on the 9-ball. He shoots it and the 9-ball hits the far left side of the pocket but still drops in, he barely made it. The crowd was going crazy, the commentators Bill Incardona and Grady Matthews made it so fun to watch. Man did I love this match, I'm gonna go watch it again!

It was from the 1990 Sands Regency tournament.

That was a crazy year as there were a ton of blowout matches.

Earl beat Nick 11-0
Jeff Carter beat Efren 11-3
Efren beat Nick 11-3

And there were a bunch of others.

One of the weird aspects of watching matches from that tournament is seeing how many players were playing with Meucci's.

Meucci had put up a bonus prize of like $6000 to anyone winning with a Meucci. Strickland collected as he was playing with one (before his Cuetec days).

The Sands used to have tables with bucket pockets back then. Earl used to go off on those tables- run five racks in four minutes, chalk up once a rack.

Varner did commentary on a match after Earl had beat him 11-0.

Nick said "I didn't even lay a glove on him"

Earl also says. "I dont care who they say the #1 player is, because I already know that im the #1 player."

So humble that Earl strickland ;)

Earl beats Nick 11-0

I love the line from mark wilson. He says something to the effect, Nick is using a tactic that I sometimes employ, the "rope a dope", were I let my opponent shoot himself out then come back and beat him. Great commentary on this match. Earl is in the zone!
