Vintage McDermotts?

Hi, Opinions welcome! I have a C-14 I've been trying to trade or sell $425 all original unique cue. I thought it would be a steal,

I'm asking AZB community if i'm way off base on the Price Point?

I know I couldn't get a cue like this made by ANYONE for $425. This is old school traditional work with high quality wood grain & character! Perhaps the Vintage McD market is slipping?

I think it's a tough price point because of everything else available in that range. Most people shopping in that price range are looking for shooters, not antiques. Also, there is some damage.

I often see people say "you couldn't get one made at this price" and honestly that has nothing to do with it at all. Really. So I wouldn't bother saying it. You can't get a C Series made at ANY price.

Personally, I have a few old McDermotts and I saw yours. I like it, and would love to have it. I am a sucker for old cues. C series and older McD's are great, I don't even look at the D Series.

But then it needs a refinish. And I have other goals on my agenda right now regarding pool cues. I just can't stretch it. I already have several backed up that need work.

I don't know that you are far off. Maybe considering the need for a refinish of the butt sleeve. Many will want to see a second shaft as well.

I think I saw a C-1 go for like $400 recently. But they are harder to find actually.

A C-21 recently went for around 1400 with two shafts and a C-16 sold somewhere South of 900.

What exactly are you hoping to trade it for?

The cue market is depressed. It is a buyers market. Unless you have something really "special" that will get buyers with deep pockets excited, it will not draw what you hope in general as a seller.

thanks

Ah, makes sense. Thanks Chop!

I have the same cue, with a linen wrap, and there is no way in hell I would sell it for even double what you are asking.

The fact is those old McDermotts were not as high quality as some may think. They were hit or miss. I had the opportunity to have many come through my hands and only a few I thought were ok. Add to that yours has, lets just say, seen a lot of play. It doesnt surprise me that this cue hasn't sold for what youre asking...

True enough. Just compare the McD to something like an Adam of the same era.

But they are nonetheless collectible and of some value to many people. Not everybody appreciates them so much though.

For me it's more about fun to own and nostalgia. And some really funky designs. I really dig my McDermotts with colored bumpers.
A green bumper 1975 McDermott with green pearlized rings and a green wrap in a case with green lining is absolutely funkalicious. Makes me nostalgic for green shag carpet.

Sure but you gotta weigh your options when owning nostalgia is gonna cost you upwards of X amount of dollars.. For me personally McDermott cues hold no nestalgia and IMO only a few I would consider collectable. But then again I guess to each their own...

I totally get it.

In many cases it's hard to justify the cost. And such things just don't turn everybody's crank.

I can't justify much cost on these, but they do turn my crank. That's why I am a bargain hunter. I don't remember what I paid for that A series McDermott but I seem to remember it was no more than 80 bucks. I could look through my records to see. It is perfect other than a tiny bit of finish flake that you can see in the picture.

That's a nice cue! I have thought about having McDermott refinish this one also, but if I ever did I knew I wouldn't sell it, and I just don't play with it as often as some others I own. Figured this way someone else can get an Original cue with a little age on it and play right away. Or perhaps a collector will buy it refinish & display.

Perhaps that serves to show what people see when they look at your cue.

You are quite honest, not hiding anything, but at the same time that honesty and the pictures that show the condition can make selling harder. I don't suggest dishonesty, nor trying to show a better side of the cue. It's just harder to sell a cue like that with some battle scars.

I know I hate the idea of getting a cue like that and immediately sending it out for repairs or refinish. I want to play with my new toys. Obviously it is playable, but I would want it pretty too. And now that we see a finer example perhaps one can see why I say that.

EDIT: As many who collect will say: "Condition is everything." So, presenting it as a collectible has some issues. Presenting it as a player puts it in a difficult price range, there is simply a lot of competition and many options for buyers in that price range.
