Vintage Palmer #17

I've been told that the weight bolt/screw on the Vintage Palmers also keeps the butt cap attached to the cue. I have a #17 where that is NOT the case. Does anyone know if this Is this unusual or not?

Also, have there been close copies of these cues made, much more recently than the 60s? Thanks, Joe
 
According to Chris Tate's site, the Model 17 was introduced in 1971 and made well into the 1980's.

There were some other manufacturers that made cues in the style of Palmers such as Adam, but since that is not my area of expertise, I will leave that subject to others for a proper and more knowledgeable answer.

Joe,

Being solid ebony, many of the 17's were heavy. It's possible somebody removed the weight bolt and glued the buttcap back on, or just glued the buttcap in place to prevent misalignment or rattle. The buttcap should have a Palmer imprint or decal if it's original, however, those decals are often lost too because they were clear coated and chipped off.

Palmer would make the model 17 on special order well into the 1980's. I haven't seen copies.

Here's a scan of the cue, more to follow - Anyone familiar with this cue, which is close to (but not he same) as any Palmer 17 that I've seen before? Thanks, Joe

Hi!


Appreciate your looking at these and suspect that this cue is not a Vintage Palmer 17 but I'm not certain. Can't imagine why someone would custom order one with less inlays, especially just above the butt cap, which looks great on all the other 17's I've seen and just OK on this one. Also, I thought the bolt/screw held the butt cap in place but this one doesn't. The buttcap and butt is either all 1 piece or it's been glued in place. The butt cap does NOT say "Palmer" as they always(?) did? None of the MOP diamonds are centered/aligned properly - they all have one MOP point of the longer side slightly higher than the other, so each side point is slightly higher than one MOP dot and lower than the other. Also, the butt weighs 16.2 oz and has a small (aluminum) screw instead of a weight bolt, that weighs only about .2 oz.

Is this a real Vintage Palmer from the 3rd Catalog - or is it a copy made much later? Really looking forward to your reply. Thanks very much! Joe

Looking into this further, I had already checked this out with the ebay seller and Peter. We agree it's a custom model 17 - all the parts are correct.
