Ole Pope
Not to discredit the fine gentlemen you're asking, but they're the wrong two. I actually went to college with Ole Pope, whose real name was Virgil Lindsay. In addition to being in and out of school, he was a tree trimmer, Madison cop, and father of four.
I think Ole represented Wisconsin once or twice in the old U. S. Open 14.1 championships, and in one of those qualifiers, he ran 80 balls. I would think both Jerry Briesath and "Sailor" Stellman were better as Wisconsin players go, but I understand that Ole got quite a bit better after I left school. He also owned the Madison poolroom Jerry Briesath eventually bought. He was the second-best player on campus when I was there, behind a guy named Mike Van Vleck, who's still around and occasionally plays 3-C tournaments. Last I heard, Ole had (1) migrated to California, (2) had open-heart surgery, (3) expired. Hope this helps. GF
