its all up to the tournament director, some tourny's will tell you "No ipods, No headphones" other tournaments or rather small tournaments just don't care, its all up to the host.
If you're not playing in a tourny and just for fun, then your opponant just don't want you to use them for some reason, and made it up as a rule of some sort.
