Hey all.
I just heard yesterday, the International VNEA tournament that has been at the Riviera for the past 1000 years will be moving to Bally's in Las Vegas next year. If true, will the BCA and the APA etc. tournaments be moving also?
Any one else heard this?
To me, this is really good news for VNEA members as I don't think the staff at Riviera likes us being there cuz we cause them to so much extra work like getting us a drink when they are so busy visiting with each other or washing glasses when there is 20 people in line waiting.

There was rumor last year that this current year was the last year of the contract for the tounaments. Something about the riv being demolished so that new hotel across the street could be finished. But I have no clue...

That may be a good change. Bally's is closer to the heart of the strip, if I remember right.

break2win...So who is your source? Is it Gary Benson? There have been rumors for YEARS that the Riv is closing, and the tournaments will move. Nothing has happened. Mark Griffin, who stages the BCAPL national tournament, would be in a position to know as much as anyone, and he has stated unequivocably that nothing is changing for the BCAPL. It would stand to reason that it would be the same for the VNEA or APA.

Scott,
I found out during our league banquet last night from Judy Mehle who is partners with Gary Benson here in the Colorado area.

break2win...Well, if anyone would know anything, it would likely be Gary, since he has run the VNEA tournament for the past 30 years (he also ran the BCA tournament for many years). I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. :D

ditto

So how big is the VNEA event compared to the BCA?

I was going to ask this myself.

The BCA event is what 10k players?I have not been there in years im just guessing.

IDC where the events are held as long as there is a sports book nearby to hang out in between matches.

Dave...The VNEA event is considerably smaller than the BCAPL, and always has been. My guess would be about 50% the size of the BCA, and it could be smaller (the event itself, has had dwindling numbers for at least the last few years). The VNEA is also fragmented, because it's an "international" event, with teams and players from 20 different countries (although they are all supposed to 'amateurs'...LOL). The BCAPL is likely about 80% American, 15% Canadian, and 5% for elsewhere. These numbers are strictly my opinion, and based only on my experience with both organizations.

Understand the TAP League has signed up for several years at Bally's as well. Their event is in November.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the players are treated at the Riv this year. I'm out there for the BCAPL's and possibly the ACS event. From past posts, the BCAPL's Mark Griffin has requested more players stay at the Riv to support them. Just seems sad to see the old grand lady lose her luster. Oh well, that's progress for you!

Mark had to request that? You mean the Riv does not sell out for the BCA?If they dont sell out then, their 'usual' occupancy must be 20%. Surprised they are still existing!

If this is true, maybe the other events will follow. I have said it many time, the Riv is a DUMP, Circus Circus is a larger DUMP IMHO!

Thank you sir-So based on those numbers, I guess the BCA is stuck at the Riv for a while. Personally Im OK with the Riv-never had a problem there but I know a lot of people cant wait to leave.

Can you splain that 5% elsewhere a little? Thanks.

Nostroke,

The BCAPL invites teams from England, Spain, Germany and Portugal to participate. There are also a few players from Australia and New Zealand who show up from time to time. The APA brings more players to Vegas each year. Their event however is divided into singles one week and team a second week later in the year. If either sanctioning body moves their event, it will be curtains for the Riv for sure!

Ill be damned- did not know that! It must be a super big deal for them to come to Vegas then. Very cool.

The TAP league has advertised that they had a 2 year deal at Bally's.

However they also advertised they had a 2 year deal in Myrtle Beach and a 2 year deal in Orlando but were only in those places for 1 year each.

I have it from a pretty good source that they could not fill the committed room blocks at either venue and could not get the same rate the next year so they moved on.

This year they are advertising a dream team event (anyone can enter a team) on top of thier National Tournament. The speculation is that they need to ensure a room commitment in order to stay their more than 1 year.

I am curious to see what happens.

It's been a few years since i've been to Bally's in LV, but I don't remember a room large enough to hold all of the pool tables needed to run the VNEA International Tournament. Maybe I didn't get passed the Casino to find out. Do they have a room large enough for a tournament that big? The Riviera has 2 huge rooms.....
